Potatoes and Molasses · 7:36am Nov 14th, 2017

Oh, potatoes and molasses
If you want some, oh, just ask us
They're warm and soft like puppies in socks
Filled with cream and candy rocks

I hum to myself as I walk out the door. Hum, hum hum. People tell me to stop humming. People stare. A few people nod along, but they're adults, and I don't think they realize I'm humming a song from a kid's cartoon.

Oh, potatoes and molasses
They're so much sweeter than algebra classes
If your stomach is grumblin' and your mouth starts a-mumblin'
There is only one thing to keep your brain from crumblin'

People stomp on by in snow boots. It's odd, it isn't snowing, it's just slushy. I try to resist the temptation to jump into the piles of slush, and make a happy splash in the gray wet snow mess, but it's just so hard not to. I mean, just cuz I'm an adult doesn't mean I have to be completely grown up, right? Right?

Oh, potatoes and molasses
If you can't see 'em, put on your glasses
They're shiny and large like a fisherman's barge
You know you've eat enough when you start seeing stars

Every person I see as I make my way to work is sad. They look tired, and as though it hasn't stopped being a long day for a very long time. I know how that feels, all to well. That doesn't mean I'm giving up on the good in the world. Some may call it being naive or foolish, but I prefer the term "irrepressible optimist." It sounds not only nicer, but also much fancier. So, when I see someone stomping by, ignoring the beauty in the world, I mentally wish them luck, I wish them happiness, and then I go on my way, humming and splashing in the slush.

Oh, potatoes and molasses
It's the only thing left on your task list
They're short and stout to make everyone shout
For, potatoes and molasses
