Getting ready for some laptop upgrading. · 10:58pm Nov 2nd, 2017

So. My old laptop (not my craptop) has been in use for almost seven years now. It was manufactured all the way back in October 2010 according to the sticker on the bottom, and it's certainly showing its age now with the measly single-core Celeron processor. Luckily, literally everything in the thing is upgradeable. I've already replaced the old battery with one that's nearly double the capacity, maxed out the RAM to 4 gigs, and sometime later this week, I'll be replacing the ol' Celeron with a nice Core 2 Duo chip, complete with twice the cores and some decent clock frequency scaling. And maybe even overclocking capabilities.

'Cause the Celeron 900 in my laptop right now is locked at 2.2GHz, but the Core 2 Duo T7300, while having a stock speed of 2.0GHz, is also multiplier-unlocked to downclock itself when it's not under load. Though, this also means that I could adjust the multiplier myself for a nice little overclock.

Maybe.

At least, that's what the BIOS settings I'm presented seem to say.

heat is going to be a problem.
i am running a Intel I7-4710HQ over clocked to 3.25 ghz stable and it holds around 105 for a temp in a lap top.
but i am talking about a asus rog g751jy so it is built to handle the heat.
it cam with a nvidia gtx 980 and 32 gig of ddr3 ram

Don't worry, the TDP of the new processor is gonna be the same as the old one- 35 Watts.

be sure to use silver super cool past and clean the fan really good.:pinkiehappy:

I already cleaned the fan not too long ago, and I've still got some thermal paste left over from some earlier projects. I'm just waiting for the CPU to arrive in the mail now. The new battery works amazing, by the way.

As for heat, the current temps of the Celeron at full load are literally at body tempurature, and since the Core 2 Duo is gonna have the same TDP rating, I don't think that heat would be too much of an issue.

i just wanted to be sure.
i would hate to hear if it going up in smoke.
i have twin 3 inch fans in my ASUS but it is a gaming rig and even under a bench mark test running 100% on the CPU and GPU i have only hit 158 for a temp.
just reading it idles at 98 up to 106.
and FYI i run twin screens or should i say a total of 3 if you count the lap to its self.

Wow. Ever consider watercooling?

And that right there is something that I probably wouldn't be able to get for quite a while. My laptop that I'm upgrading was already underpowered for its time when I first got it in third grade. The CPU upgrade is more so of me trying to squeeze as much life as possible from the device than my typical side-hobby.

And besides, that laptop has been with me long enough that it was what I first began typing up my fics on, what I've always brought with me whenever I'm on vacation, and pretty much just my all-around computer when I'm not at home.
