But not the show.
This episode was a thing. I guess? I would have far preferred to have the episode focus more on how Rarity and Pinkie both don't get that they just don't get each other. We could have had some amazing character interaction and relationship stuff with them both coming to a better understanding of how each other work and garnering a lot of squishy feelings and stuff.
Instead we got a not-quite-Ballywood song? It was, um, nice? We got to see a moral about not listening to stuck up people when they tell you something is good or bad. I mean, sure, it's a lesson worth learning I guess, but I feel that Rarity and Pinkie Pie managed to adroitly sidestep actually having to grow and develop as friends, and that put a damper on cliche indian (dot) ponies.
It wasn't bad, it just made no real impression on me. I guess it's a bit like Over a Barrel in that regard.
Cutie Map episodes in a nutshell.
I see it as Rarity and Pinkie having confidence in each other with regards to the task, then finding in that specific environment their subset of abilities are more suited. In Ponyville, they would have been right. Rarity's sense of design and Pinkie's ability to gather crowds are both legendary there. But Rarity is still a bit of a VIP in Canterlot, and Pinkie had the sense to recognize that making every restaurant homogeneous was a silly idea.

Pretty much. I still like griffonstone though.
The map is one of the worst things about season 5+. It's basically a writing crutch because coming up with actual reasons for ponies to be in places is hard.

I mean how they basically assumed the other knew what they were planning. Rarity assumed pinkie knew she was going to make the place all samey. Pinkie assumed rarity was going to help them make themselves better, but maintain their uniqueness. They both couldnt or maybe didn't consider the possibility that they were working at cross purposes.
I agree about being in the wrong environment for their original tasks. But the bigger issue is the way they didn't coordinate.
