    Eclipse 2024

Best of luck to everyone chasing the solar eclipse tomorrow. I hope the weather behaves. If you are close to the line of totality, it is definitely worth making the effort to get there. I blogged about how awesome it was back in 2017 (see: Pre-Eclipse Post, Post-Eclipse

    End of the Universe

I am working to finish Infinite Imponability Drive as soon as I can. Unfortunately the last two weeks have been so crazy that it’s been hard to set aside more than a few hours to do any writing…

    Imponable Update

Work on Infinite Imponability Drive continues. I aim to get another chapter up by next weekend. Thank you to everyone who left comments. Sorry I have not been very responsive. I got sidetracked for the last two weeks preparing a talk for the ATOM society on Particle Detectors for the LHC and Beyond, which took rather more of my time than I

    Imponable Interlude

Everything is beautiful now that we have our first rainbow of the season.

What is life? Is it nothing more than the endless search for a cutie mark? And what is a cutie mark but a constant reminder that we're all only one bugbear attack away from oblivion?

    Quantum Decoherence

    Happy end-of-2023 everyone.

I just posted a new story.

    EInfinite Imponability Drive
In an infinitely improbable set of events, Twilight Sparkle, Sunny Starscout, and other ponies of all generations meet at the Restaurant at the end of the Universe.

This is one of the craziest things that I have ever tried to write and is a consequence of me having rather more unstructured free time than usual for the last week.

Weather and the Movie · 9:40am Oct 23rd, 2017

This weekend the My Little Pony Movie was finally released in the UK, so I could watch the mane six battle the Storm King while outside a major storm hit the British Isles. Strong winds and heavy rain were forecast, but seemed to be overcome by the magic of friendship. In the end it was rather milder than anticipated and I had a pleasant walk home from the cinema.

What of the film? I loved it. Beautiful visuals and music. At times joyful and exciting, sometimes dark and a bit scary, but also quite simple and unpretentious. It was fascinating to see something different - it’s clearly made to stand apart from the episodes, and was nothing like the Equestria Girls features. We have the usual characters, and it’s packed with little references to the series, but beyond that it is exploring a new world, with new creatures, and sometimes different rules to the Equestria we know.

[I’m guessing we will not see these new characters coming into the show too much as this might create some awkward scenes. Trying to picture what would happen when Capper stops off at the Carousel Boutique to order a new tailored suit, and meets Opalescence for the first time. How would these two different breeds of catkind get along?]

It’s interesting to look at how the MLP:FiM brand has evolved. Back in the early days, Lauren Faust may have been pushing ‘many different ways to be a girl’, but it seemed the toy department was just thinking ‘pink and glitter’. But things have changed and the Movie now confidently presents ponies as a piece of pop-culture which can be enjoyed by girls, boys, children and adults. Evidently with ‘Star Wars’ in mind.

The physics highlight was of course the sight of Schrödinger’s equation, as was in the trailer. Take a look at my blog post on that if you haven’t already read it.

I would hope Capper and Opal would get along as well as Goofy and Pluto, though that's far from guaranteed. Definitely an interesting thought, though.

Also, neat to hear about the thematically appropriate (and hopefully harmless) weather to go along with the movie.

Awkward, really?! This would be incredibly interesting! Two cat species that evolved completely differently, one basically enslaved as a pet, the other one free, seeing how Capper would react to this..... I hope this is going to happen!

Capper and Opal would be related like Fido and Winona?

Pity theyre still stuck on Schroedingers in a magivcal enviroment when it cant be currently reconciled with gravity in Standard Theory.

What wouldve been better if they had S(2), SU(3) and E8 functions, or even the Monster Set as the background image on the board?

Seen so many clips and reviews of the movie. Still got to go see it. Is there a properly expanded map to cover all the regions shown, or its not going to be used any more in Season 8? Wonder how the maps of Equestria have changed over the millennia?

Theres a trick in the season 7 finale that will be relavent is some way to this as well? If looked at slantways, crosseyed, upside down and drunk? :twilightoops:

From Opal's perspective, I think she believes she's enslaved Rarity to provide her with food, cat toys, and occasional scritches.

4705949 Or, for that matter, Dog!Spike or a Diamond Dog and Winona.

yes. See derpibooru. Other than the start and end of the movie, pretty much everything takes place south of Equestria. (That isn't really a spoiler)

Awkward and incredibly interesting are not mutually exclusive

Now I'm wondering what sort of puppy Ember would be in the Equestria Girls world

In my group “The Skeptics’s Guide to Equestria”, I posted a thread about the science in the movie.

About the weather, the same weekend the MLP:FiM-Movie came out here, BladeRunner 2049 came too. I saw both. Like the weather at the time, the sky is dark and one cannot see any astronomical objects such as the sun. The mane my computer says that this is the wrong mane, but in a site for ponies, it is the right mane) difference is that people in the movies did not have to wear filtermasks for breathing.

Getting back to the MLP:FiM-Movie, the movie being 3D really opens possibilities such as movie the Sun scores of degrees a second while following pegasi slo that we can go from a spectacular sunrise to better illumination of Canterlot in 1 continuous cut. I wish that it would have been stereoscopic 3D though.
