Endings Are Hard · 3:16am Oct 15th, 2012
You know, when I asked for ideas for the Cloptober Challenge, I was reasonably confident I'd be done with Suck by now. As it turns out, while I'm mostly done with the ending, I find myself wondering if I'm tying the plot points, if it's going too long, etc. I'm actually thinking of splitting the ending in two and using what I have now as a Chapter 9.
That brings me to the topic of this here post. Why is it that endings are always so damned much harder than beginnings? When I start up a story, I'm a house afire with so many different ideas, perhaps too many. However, as I near the end, it becomes more and more difficult to make an effective ending. What is it that makes an ending so hard to write, and more to the point, what do any of you other writers reading this do to push through an ending, because it's proven to be the hardest part of fic writing to me.
Because you've now established your story and what the characters are currently doing? At least that's my take.
I wouldn't know, I've never finished a fic in my life. I should do that sometime.
As for why it's harder to end than to start... when you end a fic, you pretty much say, "Alright, I'm done with this, so it's time to move on to the next thing." I guess it's hard to do that.
I've never written a story without it being necessary, but I assume that it's because your fanfiction is no longer a blank slate.
Ask the Doctor, he hates endings too
I find the endings hard too, just because tying up all the plots pieces and achieving a sense of satisfaction/completion is difficult. For an ending to pull off that feel, it absolutely cannot be rushed and there always ends up being a lot to say. If you look at My Little Dashie, the ending action made up almost a third or fourth of the story simply because it was the culmination of everything that was set up. Again, there was just a lot to say before it cut off.
Or...Maybe your having a hard time because you feel the story could go on? Like, it hasn't really moved forward and there's no sense of overcoming some obstacle?
Plus it's clop. Endings with clop I can't really understand, because they don't have a similar plot structure to a story. There's often obstacles or challenges, so when the sex ends, there's usually just some cute little joke or a feel-good-sweet-romantic moment. That's how you ended Dream a Little Dream too. Maybe you're just feeling out the timing which is always difficult.
Anyways, looking forward to the only clop author I'll ever read posting some more over the top insanity.
Want my advice? Make the ending first and build your story around that.
the slut-o-verse (that's what I'm calling it now) could use some... eh, the sisters adventures with their respective sex-slaves...
