Chrysalis Wins update 10/14/2017 Just a question · 9:13pm Oct 14th, 2017

This is where I'm at so far.

Since there's still a good amount of space on it I'm thinking of more characters to add. - So as the blog title suggests - Is there anything/one from the show you'd like to see in this cover show case?

Not exactly from the show but it would be neat to see Radiant Heart.

Maybe Thorax and Scorpan?

Radiant heart? The comic character? hmm, Something to certainly consider.

As far as Thorax, which version you thinking? His drone form or the stag beetle? Also, Scorpan isn't a bad idea, could probably sneak him behind Discord and Tirek.

Yeah especially when you consider she's the key to reforming him and changing him back to the good pony he truly is. All his actions are after all basic manipulation by an evil mother who only cares about what he could do for her. Seeing how the comics showed him wanting to fix Princess Amore and make things right.

Stagbeetle. Heck if he showed up in the story, he could help fix relationships with changelings and ponies since this whole Chrysalis wins thing began which caused all kinds of mistrust and problems even among the changeling allies.

Indeed you could.

I'd hardly call wanting to free an entire race selfish.
I mean really, people like to overlook the fact that Equestria more or less makes ghetto's for the things they don't like and has no problem making children pay for the crimes of the elder.
I mean come on, being trapped in a pocket dimension and the only way out being through an artifact that kills your kind indescriminantly isn't something to inspire trust, forgiveness or friendship, and is really not something an entity preaching harmony of any kind save 'conformity or death' should be doing.
Adding to this a lot of the Umbrum's lines in those comics paint them as being starved and all together weak and low in numbers, I'd say they have every right to be as vindictive as they are.
Amore was honestly braindead in the comics, intent or not, and didn't do anything to recrify or even address the situation till it hit the tipping point.

What about what Chrysalis said about the Umbrum 1000 years ago? They made it so despair was all there was for changelings to eat and it's something they can't eat. Plus with the Umbrum lying to Radiant and then when their true form was revealed attacked her and Cadance, I'd say Amore was in the right to do so. Heck she was willing to help Sombra but in his anger and pair he refused to give her a chance leading to her shattering. Not to mention Cadance at first wanted to help the Umbrum if it turned out the Crystal Ponies were in the wrong which didn't last when they attacked instead.

You're right that it's not selfish in general but if your main reason for wanting your species to be free is to continue the exact thing that got you banished in the first place with no regard to those you hurt, well...they don't have a good reason to be free then. Seriously if they wanted help all they had to do was work on a compromise, instead of trying to take the empire for themselves.

Chrysalis is as a living entity the direct opposite of the umbrum, so I've no doubt that was either dramatics or her wanting to run and save face.
Lying to Radiant when for all we know thats what they were like, albeit less foal like, before being effectively forced into an eternal torture, is justified if it's save your people.
And even then, what was the one request they made of the two of them, and what does love magic do to Umbrum as the crystal heart has shown?
It hurts them. A lot. At the metaphysical level.
So if anything Cadance made the first assualt on a whim when they had potentially the means to negotiate a peace, and the Umbrum responded in kind when a creature they have no reason to trust, care for or even remotely not want to see dead attempts to hurt them.
As for deserving it, how many free passes do the ponies get before they deserve a similar punishment? Or does harmony picking sides mean they get to do whatever they want?
Thats bias, heavy bias, that gives a species a messiah complex, and coupled with the manipulated history of Equestria, both in canon and without in this case, I'm hard pressed to say this isn't a massive amount of propaganda and desperation and millenia of hatred from torture and unjust punishments haven't boiled over.
And while they lied to Radiant, the Umbrum went far out of the way to teach and protect her and even were willing to accept her amongst them after they were free.
Because they saw her as an ally and a freind after she'd proven it over literal centuries.
As for Amore, waiting till the last minute to tell someone who'se been wracked with agony and nearly ripped apart at the most basic level for what he is rather then anything he may have done for upwards of 20 years, is tantamount to saying you knew how to save someone after letting them be paralyzed. She was covering her tail, no more no less, and quite honestly deserves the scattering she got.
Maybe once shems back together and doesn't have her crown anymore she'll actually develop some common sense and drive to actually do her job.
Sombra is by all means a compatriot to mass murder and genocide of his own people in the comics.
And again, mass torture of an entire species is excusable because of what, a few border raids and them taking what they need to survive/have any magic to really speak of?
Kill them then, don't force the unborn and innocent to suffer because you're too much of a coward to face the consequences of your actions head-on.
And as for compromise, why should they when not a one ever thought to do so with them?
Why do they, who've suffered hundreds of years and more then any of the ponies, have to let them slide and get off easy?
Bygons be bygons is what a coward says to the ones they've hurt when karma and justice comes back on them.

Fair enough, still when they retaliate like that and attempt to hurt the ponies in the same way, it doesn't make it right or them better then their tormentors. All that serves to do is create a cycle of hate. The simple solution would've been to promise not to hurt the Crystal ponies after the reveal if they're willing to forgive the Umbrum for all they did back then and vice versa working towards peace and actually letting bygones be bygones instead of immediately invading the place.

Also it was less an assault on a whim and more I'll use my magic to illuminate the room so we can find her. Cadance could've used normal magic I suppose but I guess she forgot to switch which caused that issue. Not like she meant to hurt them.

Hey there guys  Just to say upfront, I did enjoy the Sombra backstory comic, in fact I think it was one of the better ones we received, considering them all. However, according to what has happened in Chrysalis Wins, I don't think I can really draw on it as a source linearly, perhaps somewhat as an inspiration.

The Crystal Empire's history and Sombra's introduction to it has already deviated from that course in a significant way. ( Sombra didn't grow up there, also changelings played a significant role in its development. ). So his key relation with Radiant Heart in the comic, wouldn't / hasn't developed the same way ( depending on if I put her in or not ). Also Chrysalis has a significantly different backstory in the comic compared to this story. ( She's not over a thousand years old, she's little over fifty ) As far as integrating the Umbrum ponies into Chrysalis Wins, I'd like to, but the method I put them in will be different from the timeline of the comics.

Also I think there may be an issue with including Stagbeetle-Thorax. Just purely mechanically speaking. I was working the ground rules of how changelings function before season 6 came along. Then that happened... :twistnerd:. So, just to point out. Thorax in the show achieved his "good guy" form by "giving love", which also "fixed his holes, which were a sign of inherent evil nature". All of which I've given different explanations and mechanics for in Chrysalis Wins. Chrysalis has already "given love", but it only had the same effect that throwing up your food does to her, not to mention it was actually an important gimmick in helping her face down Sombra initially. Also the "leg holes" for the changelings in this story were due to local parasites in the Badlands, not because they have an inherently evil nature.

The role I'd give Thorax in Chrysalis Wins would be significantly different, since several of the gimmicks the show gave him don't really line up with in-story consistancy so far... Infact, if you look at Chrysalis's Head Vanguad, Shade, he's actually played a similar role, being a changeling that's sympathetic to the plights of ponies. As well as having a significant moment chastising his own kind for their misbehavior. ( Ch.32 "Shady Business" ) If I play Thorax into it, which I think may be a good opportunity for some pokes at the show :trollestia:, then he likely won't be playing the "Savior of Changeling Kind" type role.

Hmm, skittle moose Thorax being stomped into the ground by Chryssie wouldn't really fit, plus he'd have a much more difficult time using her as a scapegoat and the sole force behind all the bad stuff changelings did while lying out of his ass. Maybe his drone form, we don't need the Eyesorelings in this story.

Sunset? The sirens? The smooze?

:trixieshiftright: For Some reason I feel very compelled to draw that now... if only for some post season 6 Catharsis

URG! yes, I found that very infuriating in the show. I mean with the Season 2 Finale we conclude that yes, Chryssie can definitely have fits of narcissim and be egotistical, but at least she could be construed as actually caring about her swarm's health and future.

Then season 6... bleh, left a sour taste in my mouth. All the sudden its NOPE! All changelings are bad by nature! Also, its all entirely Chryssie's fault that you're all suffering! She has such an EGO that she has no relate-able qualities at all! Now even if she could help all of you she wouldn't! Even though in season 2 she was clearly invested in empowering the ENTIRE swarm! Not just herself. HRMMMM, I mean c'mon, would season 2 Chrysalis intentionally keep her swarm weak? ( I think she would have no problem empowering her subordinates, as long as they remain loyal what's the problem?. )

Maybe his drone form, we don't need the Eyesorelings in this story.

oh gee, those designs... its almost as if they wanted to kill everything that made changelings an interesting or compelling species in the first place. They did a good job of making the designs as unappealing and nonsensical as their new motivations. Seriously, what are their new motivations? I still haven't figured that out. -sigh- I mean, if ya gotta make em good, then they could go with something less offensive to the eyes. FOR EXAMPLE, the comics came out with a "Good Chrysalis" whose design I actually find rather charming and cute.

nothing so over the top, or completely garishly different. It still easily identifiable as Chrysalis, but shows its differences without making you blink to reorient your comprehension.

Sunset? The sirens? The smooze?

All good suggestions! I think I'll go ahead with those Even I still have yet to figure what to do with them exactly. :raritywink:

An unfortunate side effect of the writers intentionally wanting her to be irredeemable. I remember they stated they specifically didn't want Chrysalis of all the villains to have a good side.
And it's as braindead then as it is now.
