So, how do the SoarinDash shippers feel?

so awesome

Rainbow Dash has committed heresy by refusing to eat one of Pinkie Pie's homemade pies. Let's feed her to a giant cake as punishment. :')

this episode is paralleled in the last comic... right..? :rainbowhuh:
better though... watching Pinkie go insane is always funny... :pinkiecrazy:

And that is why cupcakes happened.

Well I guess RD must not want to put up with anything when March 14 rolls around.

So much PinkieDash, I didn't even mind the superficial similarities to Party of One. They were superficial anyway; the misunderstanding was mutual this time, and it made for a far more interesting dynamic.

Watched this one when it leaked, so I don't think it's appropriate to make commentary. Only thing I'll say is that this episode seemed kinda pointless to me overall. Meh.
Just my opinion, though. Still had its funny moments.

This is literally me trying to avoid eating my vegetables when I was younger. I'd always find ways to hide them or get rid of them and my mom would always get really angry when she finds out that I didn't eat any.

Still a great episode though!

I loved seeing RD mess with Pinkie on such a high level. It was a nice role-reversal.

Ha, this was a great loony toons type episode. Had some great jokes and such in it. But it was missing Rarity.

Bridge of Pies.

I almost gagged when that nasty garbage pie splattered onto Rainbow's face. I seriously thought she was going to go through with it:pinkiesick:.

How the hell is it possible to not like pie?!?! :rainbowhuh:

This episode is reminiscent of the very silliest, wackiest season 1-2 episodes, which is why I disliked it. I'm weird in that my favorite silly episodes are Party Pooped and 28 Pranks Later. I like the silly episodes that are more elaborate. A simple story makes me want something grounded and slice of life. I can see why people would enjoy this one, but it's not my style.

Its *twink*:pinkiecrazy: the return*twink*:pinkiecrazy: of crazy pinkie!:pinkiecrazy:

On a world lore point, nothing new here.

On a character lore point, it seems Rainbow Dash is a terrible pet owner, even after taking Tank to the vet and learning that eating pies is very unhealthy for him, she throws another pie down a chute to his food bowl.

As for the episode itself:

I am not fond of unnecessary contradictions.

In ‘Brotherhooves social’ Rainbow Dash ran a race which required her to not only eat a pie, but do so in front of a stand of ponies and several judges who’s job was to make sure each leg of the race was completed with in satisfaction of the rules. And seeing as Dash and Scootaloo weren’t disqualified for failing to complete the pie eating part of the race we can assume she did in fact eat the pie.

Granted one can write that off as the exception, and that racing with Scootaloo was just important enough to Rainbow Dash to put up with eating a pie she didn’t like.

But one of the things I like less than unnecessary contradictions, is logical impossibilities. Pies are such a broad category of flavors that it’s not possible to hate “all pies” without hating all food. And Rainbow Dash doesn’t exactly strike me as an undead zombie that died of starvation years ago thanks to hating all food. Or even malnourished, seeing and she’s a top-notch athlete and all.

On top of that we’ve seen Rainbow Dash eat and enjoy cake, so we can’t really say she hates surgery bread. (aka pie crust) And even then pie crust has several recipes that provide different flavors. And we’ve seen that Dash likes the taste of apples, and broccoli, so we already know two flavors of pie that Dash has no justification for disliking.

In the end the overall all premise of the episode is too illogical to justify. And even ignoring all of that, it felt overall pointless.

While I can name episodes that came across as more poorly written than this one, Secrets and Pies is certainly near the bottom of the barrel in terms of quality in my opinion. You can probably enjoy it for sight gags or something as long as you don't think too much about what's going on, but in terms of storytelling value there’s nothing here.

It's like a fic of mine became an episode.

You know, this was a very season 1/2 episode. Completely slice of life, takes place in Ponyville, good characterization akin to Party of One.

I liked it.

4697676
While I don't find it as bad as you do, I agree that the episode is among the lower rungs on quality. If one finds the gags funny, it could work, but I found a lot of them repetitive, especially in the second half.

You're right, too, that Dash is quite irresponsible with Tank. It would not be an issue if the episode did not explicitly say how pony foods are not meant for other animals.

4697689

Actually I wouldn't call it "bad." just pointless. more like "neutral in a sea of good, which make's it bad by comparison." But in the grand scale of things I wouldn't actually put it in the bad category.

4697632

Yes though after seeing the episode I do not think that the comic makes so much sense. The comic feels like it really needs to ignore many details of the episode to really make sense. Considering how many pies Pinkie served Dash over the years and that Pinkie kept careful track of what pies and when she gave them out it certainly makes that plot less likely to work.

Uh, sooooooooooo...anyone gonna be nitpicking every single episode/EQG/comic/short/musicVideo moment to see Rainbow Dash eating a pie?

4697628
Probably terrible since she didn't gave away any of her pies to Soarin. Would be a better use than wasting them on the garbage.

It was Party of One, but without the retardation that has plagued Pinkie's characterization in the minds of fanfic writers since S1.

Nothing spectacular, but certainly not terrible either.

You know, it's funny, I'm seeing comments on Equestria Daily and one here saying that this is like an improved Party of One and generally looking more down on Party of One than I would expect. Has that episode gotten less popular? On the one hand I want people to enjoy things but on the other hand Party of One is one of my least favorite episodes and I can't help feeling a bit of happiness at the idea that it might be frowned upon more than it used to be.

I really enjoyed this episode. It had a good moral about the value of honesty vs hurting others feelings, and was really funny to boot! :pinkiehappy:

I wouldn't want a cook like Pinkie around though, churning out a million delicious pies a minute... I'm trying to save my appetite for Christmas day, you know. :pinkiecrazy:

Huk

Overall, it was funny episode BUT... is it only me or the moral of the story was: 'It is OK to lie to your friends if that makes them feel good'? :twilightoops:

This was a fun episode. Nothing especially heavy in story or morals, but very fun. Definitely one to rewatch later.

Animation-wise, I liked how with that vaguely pie-shaped horror Dash baked up they didn't go for the usual trope of drawing gross-out shots in a radically different style from the rest of the cartoon. For one, it's less visually jarring to watch. For another, I guess it makes it fell more, quote unquote, genuine -- like it's really that disgusting, rather than it just being a result of overanalyzing something acceptable.

I was a bit worried about how they were going to portray the conflict, but I think they did fine. Dash had the best of intentions, I get that, but throughout the episode I was thinking of how I would genuinely be pretty d**n pissed in Pinkie's position -- baking that many pies takes time and effort, and it would be pretty insulting to see something I put care, time and dedication into making get sent to the trash, repeatedly.

4697755

It almost felt like it, but the ending did emphasize that while Dash's intentions were admirable, she should just have been honest to Pinkie to begin with, and Pinkie would have accepted it.

So what i got from it was "lying to your friends to make them feel better isn't bad, but you could do better, and if you keep it up too long it's all going to end in tears sooner or later".

Am I the only one questioning how the fuck Pinkie failed to notice that group of foals taking the pies outta Rainbow's hooves directly in front of her!?

4697755 4697762
The moral here is clearly, “It’s ok to lie to your friends if you must do so in order to maintain social harmony.”

4697638
Pretty much my thoughts exactly. Evil laser-eye Rainbow Dash was the best part.

These was a lighthearted episode. but it's been done before with Spike and Rarity . I wish there a reason for her to hate pie. Is it the crust or the filling? I mean I hate raw vegetables it's texture thing, which why I hate salads. And I don't think the morel is lying is good.
Rainbow Dash said she was wrong. Pinkie just said she understood why she did it.

Um... OK guys but... am I the only one who has a problem with the moral of the story? Perhaps it is my inner 'bastardness' speaking, but teaching kids that lying is an OK social norm (even if we are talking about 'white lies') seems very wrong to me :twilightoops:

I'm starting to miss the 'letter to the princess' part of the earlier episodes...

Yeah, while the moments with Pinkie were hilarious, Rainbow was mean to do such a thing for so long.

Good thing she didn't eat her own pie, though. :fluttershyouch:

Okay first off, Pinkie Pie is crazy and I love it!

Second, Rainbow Dash's speed has kicked up anther notch. She just pulled a Flash when she grabbed balloons and tied the pie to it in that split second.... I think Rainbow Dash has the Speed Force...I'm sure of it.

Third, someone needs to make story about that evil Rainbow Dash. That reminded me of Fleetway Sonic. Perhaps that's where the idea came from. I wouldn't be surprised. In the episode "Triple Threat", Ember was doing a lot of Superman/Iron Man landings, so there could be some epic nerds in the room.

For the story as a whole, I enjoyed it.

I know this is unrelated (well to the episode anyways), but I want an episode with Fluttershy and Spike.

get out the way rainbow, pinkie's pies are MINE!

Evil Rainbow Dash was hilarious :rainbowlaugh:

4697684
That's exactly what I associated with too. Anyway, adored it :pinkiehappy:

4697633
Well, if you think about it, it's a perfect motivation! :pinkiecrazy:

4697830
I think it was, IMO, one of the funniest recent episodes. Actually, it was easily top 10 funny MLP episodes ever :applejackunsure:

Like some others have said, this felt like a Season 1 episode, with a very simple slice-of-life plot. All that was missing was a letter to Celestia. It had some fun sight gags, but in terms of world-building and character development, it didn't offer anything new. There was nothing wrong with the episode, but I have no desire to watch it again.

Also, I can't believe they got through the entire episode without one mention of Soarin's love of pie.

4697796

Perhaps it is my inner 'bastardness' speaking, but teaching kids that lying is an OK social norm (even if we are talking about 'white lies') seems very wrong to me :twilightoops:

Uh, what? :rainbowhuh: The episode explicitly called out the lying as wrong! It had two lessons, one for each of them, and Rainbow's was that she should have been open and honest with her friend rather than lying in an attempt to spare her feelings.

Pinkie forgave her because, while Rainbow had done the wrong thing, she'd had good intentions and learner her lesson and was trying to make it up to her.

Was it me or was this episode an example of "Element-stereotypical behaviour comes to bite you in the butt"? Out of loyalty to Pinkie Pie (not wanting to hurt her feelings), Rainbow Dash ended up hurting her and getting herself in a lot of trouble. Oddly enough, this makes 'Secrets and Pies' a similar episode to 'Honest Apple'. I wonder if this is is a new running theme that the writers are planning to go with?

Look, I don't really like shipping but it's clear what the show writers are trying to tell us here:
"You sure are going for a lot trouble for Rainbow Dash's pie"
- Twilight Sparkle S7 Ep23
Like jeez, we get it. They are the BEST of friends. And Pinkie is always forcing her pie on Rainbow Dash.

4697796

4697873

Pinkie forgave her because, while Rainbow had done the wrong thing, she'd had good intentions and learner her lesson and was trying to make it up to her.

Exactly. I thought the ending mad it pretty clear that it was a bad idea on Rainbow's part to lie -- if she had been honest about her feelings, Pinkie would have accepted the she just didn't like pie and that would have been the end of that. But her constant lying, born out of good intentions though it was, ended up causing nothing but trouble -- she had to go through enormous amounts of effort to cover up the fact that she wasn't eating Pinkie's pies, and in the end it all blew up in her face anyway.

That was the lesson I got out of this episode -- if you tell one lie, then you need to tell another to keep the truth hidden, and then another to support that one, and then another and another and another and another and another until you've built a ridiculously and needlessly complex fiction to keep your previous lies from being exposed... until the whole house of cards inevitably comes crashing down anyway, and then everyone is even more hurt and disappointed than if you'd been a little harsh but truthful at the beginning. Being honest is simpler, easier, much better in the short and long term and generally much preferable.
