The My Little Pony Movie is a Must See · 5:44pm Oct 8th, 2017
Very mild spoiler due to a screen shot ahead, but I'll refrain from more.
I have to admit that I had my doubts about the MLP movie. Sure it finally delivered a MLP movie that was placed in Equestria with actual ponies. But the different style of the movie made me wonder wonder if it would diverge from the world established in the show. And it did, but not where it mattered.
While watching I was treated to our familiar characters who all behaved as you would expect them. The world was still the same world we saw in the series with all its usual lore and rules. The movie just expanded on it with more stuff outside of Equestria that includes a lot of new locations and species.
It took me a second to get used to the new style with its 3D backgrounds and with how the characters are drawn. But it didn't take me long to realize this was because it reminded me of the more traditional Disney style animation (though modernized). Which is a big leap from the hard edges cartoon like style animation the show has. It's different but I grew fond of it quite quickly. It's been a loooong time since I've seen a solidly animated 2D movie that plays to it's strengths and is beautifully animated.
Story wise it of course has its weaknesses but none of them are fatal. You won't really notice them as the movie takes you on a fun ride with a familiar cast while introducing memorable characters. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and it had me laughing and smiling quite often with the small gags and well delivered scenes/lines. Rarity's "Oh, for Celestia's sake!" scream was a delight (she has several excellent ones). You'll have to watch the movie several times to be able to catch all the little details as there are a lot of them that are easily missed. The movie has a lot that happening in the background and characters are constantly doing little things.
Though this movie has confirmed for me that Twilight Sparkle is best pony. Just look at her:
I completely lost it at that scene with how perfectly it was delivered. Twilight wins all the awards for best facial expressions in this movie.
Other awards are doled out as following:
- Best one liners and commentary: Rarity
- Best plot device: Pinkie Pie
- Best unconventional defeat of a bad guy: Fluttershy
- Best weapon: Spike
- Best performance of not being bothered with whatever happens: Applejack
- Best saboteur: Rainbow Dash
Pinkie was a bit of a surprise for me with how well her character is used in the movie. She is of course Pinkie being Pinkie but she actually moves the story along at crucial points in a meaningful way. Now if they only would manage that in the show.
Suffice to say the movie is worth watching. So much better than the Equastria Girls movies with animation that reminds me of the good old 2D days.
