Flash Notion

The hardest part about writing is that nothing you make is ever as good on the page as it was inside your head... but other people don't know that, so we worry over nothing.

    Jinglemas 2022

Hello. Been a while. So I signed up for this thing, as a way to get back to writing. There's still a bit of time left for the .5 of you who bother reading these posts but somehow aren't aware of one of the bigger site-wide events to sign up for it. Happy holidays!

I LIVE!!!! (and so does this thing...)

I'm not here to give another life update. Suffice to say, I've about given up on keeping myself "together". I'll try and get stories out, but I make no promises about when or what or anything.

But, for those who still care:
Beanis is back! Remember the beans? Majin does. Go give him the usual love/hate.

Only a couple hours to go (for me)

    So. 2020 is almost over.

This... certainly has been a year. Lots of bad things happened. Lots of bad things are going to continue happening.

I don't want to dwell on it.

Instead, I'd like to take the time to reflect on some of the good things that I experienced this year. In no particular order.

    Smol Update

December is here, the stores are playing Silver Bells, and this site's Jinglemas 2020 event has officially started.

I've gotten my prompt and made my outline. I just need to buckle down and write the thing.

Flash's Library Catalog Vol. I · 2:25am Sep 26th, 2017

Flash's Notions:
Betcha had to read that one twice, huh? In any case, I already tried writing reviews, and I realized it was boring. So I decided to do something a little different. I'd take every story I ever read on this site- every story- and make a sort of reference series about them. This being the first volume, you're likely wondering about a system.
Well.
Firstly, each story is sorted into a recommendation level of 0-10. A story with a “10” rating is one I consider essential to read, a can't miss opportunity. Please note that this is completely biased, and you might not agree.
Then, I have a slightly more objective section. I judge each story on four categories: Concept, Execution, Characterization, and Technical (grammar and spelling and the like). Each is scored out of 25. Then, I add up the scores for a percentage total and a letter grade. At some point, I will write about a story that is recommended “9” but would score really bad in this section.
Finally, I'll write a few sentences about the story. No official synopsis here!

I figure that, for the sake of getting them out of the way, most of Volume 1 is going to be the worst of my (non-clop) library. Lets get started, shall we?

Twilight's Kingdom is smothered in Semen
by TheBlackPony

Recommendation: 2/10

Scores (out of 25):
Concept: 16
Execution: 20
Characterization: 19
Technical: 17
Final: 72%, C-

Hoo, boy.
So, a while back somepony wrote a story (we'll get to it some day) about Twilight's bathroom getting filled with semen. For some unfathomable reason, that story spawned a sequel. And another sequel. And then some spin-offs and a parody and then this sequel. Thankfully, the crazy appears to have died (or maybe a sensible person murdered it), and no new stories have been written for a while.
This one isn't terrible- objectively, it's actually got some good jokes and the ending in particular makes me chuckle. But really? There are much better things to waste your time on.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Overpowered (Equestria Girls)
by Emotional Flight

Recommendation: 2/10

Scores (out of 25):
Concept: 11
Execution: 22
Characterization: er, AU all the way. Still... 17?
Technical: 23
Final: 73%, C

Another sequel written by someone other than the original author. However, in this case, the author produced almost every previous work in the series. So it feels more like copying. Plus, while it does capture the same style, it's much shorter and in general not as fun. With just one chapter per movie, it misses out on some glorious opportunities for humor. Ultimately, if you've read the rest of the series, you should read this just because. If not... move on.

Rarity's Messy Day

by The Dark Wolf

Recommendation: 2/10 (unless you are seriously into scat stuff)

Scores (out of 25):
Concept: 19
Execution: 7
Characterization: 12
Technical: 14
Final: 52%, F

No. Just no. I'll admit this sort of thing can be hot at times. However, the rushed writing style and seeming lack of effort instead turn it into the most... bleah thing I think I've read. Almost boring, really, if it weren't so sickening.
Now, the author says not to take it seriously, but that's just what I do.
Also, the rest of the author's- ahem- work- is very similar. Look elsewhere for your smut. I plan on a full Clop Volume at some point (possibly more than one), so wait for that.

Solar Wind
by FanOfMostEverything

Recommendation: 10/10

Scores (out of 25):
Concept: 25
Execution: 23
Characterization: 21
Technical: 24
Final: 93%, A

As the author himself says, everyone is entitled to a dumb story. Read this one! Rounding off this first volume with one of my favorite stories, we learn why Celestia seems racist towards her sister's favorite tribe. Hint: the title has nothing to do with her mane.
It may be immature, but this is the best joke of it's kind I've ever experienced.

Something for your real world bookshelf...

The Hunt For Atlantis
by Andy McDermott

This wonderful novel is like an action movie on paper. The start of a series focusing on the search for ancient relics and ruins, it fleshes out a mythology for Atlantis while simultaneously cracking jokes and developing interesting characters. If you're a fan of old school action-adventure flicks (Indiana Jones comes to mind), pick this up at your local bookstore.

I was pretty skeptical when I heard somepony compare it to Daring Do. But Eddie Chase and Nina Wilde give my hero a run for her bits! I know she'd love to meet them someday, because I want to, too!
