A Family Down Under: Rewrite? · 3:57am Sep 21st, 2017
A Family Down Under did a considerable job in ratings but suffered from likes, so I never quite got into it. Looking back, I find the plotline to be incredibly lackluster but the premise to be interesting. Normally I wouldn't write anything like this today because it feels like it would do better as a book, but I kind of want to go back to it. Although, I want to change things up a bit: I want to make it a grimdark horror story.
Most of what I have planned for my other stories are very dark, and I think taking on a harsher tone to an older story of mine will be a perfect way of adapting to a new format. My only real concern is that I have no idea where I'm going to take it. Most of my stories are planned out through the bone, although with this one I want to go in with a stoic Stephan King attitude and write it all on the fly to see how far I can push my boundaries.
I think it's possible, considering I have written stories on the fly in the past and those have been more successful than when I plan them out. Although I tend to waver away from them because they are ultimately structureless. I do, however, believe the ability to develop the story as it goes from chapter to chapter and slowly edges into the climax. The one thing that bothers me is I don't think it will be good enough. I will be reading a lot of books to write this, but I'm afraid it might turn out bland, or cringy. I would prefer cringy over bland any day, but I think I'm going to try and shy away from that.
What do you think?
