I Smell Like a Campfire · 10:39pm Sep 5th, 2017
It's another one of those times when I gear up to try and finish a chapter, but then nature strikes.
Last year it was a tornado touching down in the neighboring city, this time a brush fire started in my town. The fire was mainly ravaging the neighborhood on the mountain, but thanks to strong winds from the canyon, my neighborhood deeper in the valley had to deal with a crap ton of smoke and some stray embers causing smaller fires in the fields (Dad had to put some out in the field behind us).
So, Dad took the horses to our uncle's house and I took the dog to the local events center (serving as an evacuation center) to wait out the entire thing until the Fire Department said that we were clear to go home. We folks living in the valley got to go home relatively early, since our homes were safe; can't say the same for those living on the mountainside, a few families even lost their homes. Thankfully, we're all alive and nobody got hurt.
My brother (living in Brazil) did get worried when he got the news over Facebook. And Mom got off work to make sure we were all right. And my aunt was worried about her daughter, who's staying with us as she goes to the local college around here. And I was getting a little worried about what would happen with my sister when she got out of school, but it was safe to go home before school got out, so that little thing worked out. And we have a story to tell my other sister, who's still in the South.
I still smell like a campfire though.
Thank goodness no one was hurt. And that your horses (I imagine an older pair with 8 children) are all OK.
Good to hear that everyone made it out unharmed.

It would've been much worse had there not been a river that's essentially in several backyards (mine included; ironically, that river tried to kill us several years ago with a flood). I might have understated the fire that did make it into the valley and follow the highway back there--looking at aerial view photos in the local news really puts into perspective how much the landscape was scorched (our poor mountain is heavily scarred).
But, yeah, everyone's okay in my neck of the woods. It was bad and a few people lost their homes, but it was no monster like other wildfires happening in other Western States....
...okay, anyone else find it weird that one side of the U.S. is dealing with hurricanes and flooding while the other side is literally on fire?
4659879 Yeah, it seems like we're experiencing average weather, it's just unevenly distributed.

Yeah, I had the same thought--we're having a lot of opposite-extremes weather lately.
Edit: Sorry about the deleted comments, my reply wasn't loading properly and I had to re-type it several times.
Good to hear you're ok
