What is a Fullmetal Pony? · 8:36am Aug 30th, 2017
When Twilight is the BEST approached me about writing a bit of a review of their story Fullmetal Pony I was pretty hesitant. While my knowledge of pop culture is broad, wide and deep, anime is one of the areas I haven’t been able able to spend much time in. While I’d like to see more, I simply don’t have the time to separate the good stuff from the drawn-by-horny-college-guy crap.
While I have heard of Fullmetal Alchemist I have not seen more than five minutes of it and with so little knowledge of the background material I was hesitant to say “yes.” But I did, warning TISB about my deficiencies and telling them that I would give it a fair shot. So, bear in mind that the following comes from someone who knows diddly-squat about Fullmetal Alchemist.
In short, I enjoyed the story, a lot. The world is detailed, the character full of motivation and incentive. The writing is technically very good, getting all those fiddly punctuation and grammar rules down just right. The writers really made me feel that I was sitting by Shining Armor while on a train trip, or with Rainbow Dash, chasing down discordants, or backing away from a knowledge obsessed Twilight Sparkle.
Now, for the bad parts. This story isn’t a My Little Pony story and the characters are not the characters we know and love from the show. They are pony characters who, for the most part have a few similarities to the characters we know, but that’s all. Now, this is not a bad thing of itself, but if you go in expecting to see “our” MLP characters in a Fullmetal world, you are going to be disappointed.
But that is all that I could find to criticize about this story. Overall, I consider it a fine addition to my list of tracked stories and I think a lot of folks would find it enjoyable as well. Probably the best praise I can give this story is that it has made me want to track down Fullmetal Alchemist and watch it.
