If You Came to Conquer Now Has a Russian Translation: Кто с мечом придёт · 8:27am Aug 26th, 2017

It came to my attention today (through rather indirect means) that a user named Doof translated If You Came to Conquer into Russian.

The Russian title is Кто с мечом придёт: Who Come Sword in Hand. ("K-toh s mee-chom pree-jyet" is the closest pronunciation I could figure out.) This is half of a quote from a movie, Alexander Nevsky:

Those who come to us in peace will be welcomed as a guest. But those who come to us sword in hand will die by the sword!

This is actually quite clever. It mimics the same ideas and structure as the original title. Both are half of quotes from other things, and both reference the idea that violence begets violence. Yet the translation uses something that is (presumably) more familiar to the target audience. It translates the ideas rather than just the literal meaning.

Now, since I don't speak Russian, I cannot attest to the translation's quality one way or the other. But if the translator put the same thought and attention to detail into the story as they did into the title, then I am confident they did a wonderful job. And if you happen to be reading this, Doof, thank you for translating my story. It's flattering that someone spent that much time and energy on something that I wrote. :twilightsheepish:

For the curious or multilingual among you, here are the links I could find to the translated version;

4648413 How does it compare to the original?

Oh, it was unexpected... Well, I should thank you for giving me chance to read the most sensual and profound story about Nightmare I has ever read. I cannot remember anything that could match it, honestly. It was just a delight to translate such an outstanding story. :pinkiehappy:
