[Rant] Why saying "It's my opinion" doesn't matter anymore · 5:44pm Aug 24th, 2017

I am sick and tired of people saying "it's my opinion".

If you haven't noticed, which is fine I wouldn't expect you to, as of late I have been jokingly stating in my blogs that you can criticize my opinion because it doesn't matter or something along those lines; I'm too lazy to actually go see and quote myself on it. Either way that's the gist of it. The reason I've been doing this is because I've realized my opinion is NOT a shield I can hide behind to stop people from speaking. I can't say something fucking retarded and then immediately say "it's my opinion, so you can't criticize me" thinking that will stop people from hating my thoughts. No, the criticism will roll in nonetheless, and one can argue that it actually encourages the criticism of your opinion because you've gone and pointed it out.

You want an example of this "it's my opinion" bullshit? Look no further than PokéTubers. I'll save most of my thoughts on these fuckers for another day, but the main thing I want to talk about now is their overreliance on the aforementioned phrase. Take a look at any PokéTuber's channel, pick a single video and nine times out of ten they will say "it's my opinion" after saying something asinine. It's almost as if they realize their opinion sucks and this is quite literally their only line of defense against criticism. What they realize the least is that criticism, and admittedly I should have mentioned this before, comes from other people's opinions. Your opinions are not a shield from the opinions of someone else. For example, say you were someone like Eryizo, a PokéTuber, and you said Salamence was the worst Pokémon ever because reasons. Someone else could easily give you hard evidence and their own opinions to prove that Salamence is a great Pokémon and your opinion is god awful.

Which leads me into my final point: to the shock of I'm sure pretty much everyone, it is possible for you to have a terrible opinion. A common misconception is that everyone's opinion matters and is totally right no matter what someone says. Well, Hitler had an opinion. Stalin had an opinion. Trump has an opinion. Does that make them correct? Absolutely not. Granted they didn't go around explicitly stating "it's just my opinion" in those exact words, the fact still stands that their opinions are false and should be frowned upon.

(Okay, I know that I said that was my last point but I just want to add something somewhat unrelated to my string of thoughts here. It is a fully researched fact that using a word or a statement over and over and over again causes the word or statement to lose its meaning. This means that yes, the phrase "it's my opinion" has pretty much lost all its meaning from having so many people use it. Next time you hear someone on YouTube say the aforementioned phrase, don't be afraid to criticize their opinion. In a constructive way of course, I do not condone bullying.)

Arguably you could say this is my opinion and I'm just being a goddamn hypocrite, and to some extent you'd be right. But I'm not afraid to say that I don't care about what you say about this blog. Roast me if you want to, I'll be ready for it. I don't need to say "it's my opinion" because I've realized there is nothing stopping you from criticizing me and whatever bullshit things I might say. So instead of trying to protect my opinions, I'm embracing the criticism of others so I can improve my opinions and ultimately become a better person instead of a robotic husk that likes to cling to their opinions like it's the last bit of humanity they have left.

And speaking of PokéTubers, I do promise to get to them eventually. Trust me I have some words towards them.
