Last night, I decided to try and attempt to 100% Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles before Mania launches on the 15th.
Two down, one to go.
Also...
I didn't think it was possible, but apparently it is. There are seven eight (thanks, Phazon!) star posts in Emerald Hill Zone, and I got to them all (collecting 50 rings between each) within the time limit, fetching all seven emeralds before the first boss.
With Super Sonic, I blew through the rest of the game in under 40 minutes.

I'm putting together the Epilogue for Sunburst's Weekend Off, then the first half of Season 7 hits Netflix tomorrow, so then I'll be good to go; it beats searching Dailymotion for one with not-screwed-pitch audio.

Check again, Miles! There are eight Star Posts in Emerald Hill Zone; three in the first act and five in the second.

The eighth one (or really the 7th one, in the order you're supposed to pass them) is near the end of Act 2, on a platform right between the last checkpoint and a platform with 4 Coconuts, a 1-Up, and 15 rings. With enough skill, there are at least three ways to get to it, though I don't recommend reaching Coconuts Island and jumping down from there.
With that said, I was about to ask if you got all the Chaos Emeralds with Sonic and Tails, but then I saw the video you uploaded. Good job, man. That takes skill. Most people I've heard from hate doing it as Sonic and Tails.
As for S3&K, I usually get Super Sonic by the end of Hydrocity, and I know of at least eight Special Stage rings between Angel Island and Hydrocity. I've heard there are eleven Special Stage rings in Mushroom Hill, but I've only ever been able to get the Super Emeralds as early as Sandopolis.

I wish I had a platform where I could try the 2013 Android version of Sonic 2. Apparently the Special Stages are fully rendered at 60 FPS, and gravity doesn't affect you like it does in the original.
And same; every S3&K 100% run I've done; I've nabbed the seven Chaos by Hydrocity (how do you pronounce that, anyway? Hydro-city or Hydrocity like "Velocity"?) and the last Super Emeralds in Sandopolis; I don't think there are enough ring portals accessible in Mushroom Hill and Flying Battery.

I'm not sure. I've always pronounced it Hydro City (and probably always will), but logically it should be pronounced as hydrocity, same as velocity, since there's no space between 'hydro' and 'city'.
As for Mushroom Hill, the best level maps I could find suggest that two Special Stage rings in Mushroom Hill are only accessible by Knuckles, and two are inaccessible by Knuckles. So at best, that might leave nine, but the stages are so big and confusing that I usually end up brushing up against the time limit if I try to explore.
And with Flying Battery, each act has 2 rings, but I've only ever found one apiece. And for good reason, they're hidden too well! The hidden one in FB2 is understandable because you would never think to look there, but the hidden one in FB1? Well, I'll post some level maps if you're interested, but let's just say that the one in FB1 had me cracking up.

Did you do Sonic 2 in Sonic & Tails mode? That's impressive. Without someone on the second controller to steer him, I've never been able to beat the later special stages because of the AI delay.

Not bad. I know perfecting all of the Special Stages gets you 700,000 alone, so that gets you most of the way there. And I assume you're not going to spin dash in front of the alarms in Launch Base zone. That sends the Flybot767's at you infinitely, which racks up a combo and lets you grind score and lives. Boring as fuck, though.

I'll admit, I tried that during that run, and once the combo gave me about 4,000 points, the points stopped coming.
Not sure if the Steam version is patched, but yeah, I didn't exploit that.
And yeah, getting Perfects on all 14 Special Stages gets you the most of it. The rest of the time was spent getting lucky on the slot machine bonus stage, being anal about the rings, then finishing most stages with 250-400 rings for 25,000-40,000 each.
