Is it offensive to put the word 'Nigga' in a story?
I mean, we have messed-up fetishes and people who sneakily put pornographic art covers on their stories and Meeester is still an unlikable fecal speck, so with the wonderfully ruined innocence of this rapidly declining site I was wondering if I would get into trouble for using the word.
If you're wondering why I'm asking, I FINALLY had an idea for a story that involved Thunderlane standing in the middle of a black community and saying the 'N' word. Yeah I just gave away the premise of the fanfic but come on; you all lost respect for me years ago so it's not like any of you are going to read it anyway, and it's probably for the best. Don't know why I said the 'N' word either when I already used the full word earlier, but still...I'm not very clear on the use of racist words in MLP stories that even black people use when talking to each other.
I would imagine it's okay, considering the insane amount of profanity and f**ked up concepts used in other fanfics that HAVE BEEN FEATURED before, like ponies getting raped or turned into sex slaves.
So...is using the word 'Nigga' offensive? Even if it is only said once in the story?
I'm white, by the way. Also, I'm not a racist scumbag. I just want to make Thunderlane into one.
Also, despite what I said earlier, you can read the story if you want to, when it's done. Just...try not to feel too unclean about yourselves afterwards.
Ehhhhh...... Personally, I'd say no. I mean yeah, you're right about the fetishes/profanity/effed-up concepts thing, but if you're planning to have a pony say it, it's like injecting human culture into pony society, and I feel like that wouldn't really make any sense. I'd come up with another word that's an easily understandable substitute if the whole point of the story is a "that's not your word to use" kind of idea.

As for the context...um...well, Thunderlane was just going to stand in the middle of a small community and just....shout it. Just shout it. That's it. I never said it was going to be a good fanfic. Just a dumb stupid little laugh. Like, a crappy Family Guy gag.
Which now when I think about it, Family Guy already did a joke about Peter shouting the word to black people. But then again I wrote a story about Twilight and Celestia copying that 'You're a wizard Harry' joke from YouTube and that still got a load of views from people...

No no no, I was going to have Thunderlane shout it to BLACK HUMANS. Not black ponies. Just because he wanted to see if he could get away with it because he's black too. No reason why he's in the human world; I mean there's so many stories where ponies are in the human world without explanation it wouldn't matter anyway so might as well get on board the Illogical Train. I would say, no. It should be just fine; a character in a story isn't a representation of the author unless that was the intent. I think author surrogates are dumb for the most part and people who attempt to make the argument that the author is a racist because they made a racist character, is stupid.

And if your character is racist and in dialogue or thought uses racist slurs, well, that's the character.I mean, would it make sense for a story set in the early 1800's to not make use of the word, "nigger?" Examples of what I'm talking about are, "Uncle Tom's Cabin," "To Kill a Mockingbird," and "Huckleberry Finn," being just a few I can name off of the top of my head wherein to create believable characters in a believable world, racist slurs such as, "nigger," are common when in context to the situation.
tl;dr, the word, "nigger," is fine given context and character in my own opinion.

Y'know, 4625157 makes a really fair point. If given proper context, you could definitely make it work. But if Thunderlane isn't actually inherently racist and is just trying to see if he can get away with saying the N-word... I feel like it's pointless.
...Then again, considering how many pointless fics there are on this site by some authors...
Honestly, I'll just leave the decision to you. I personally vote for "don't do it," but I guess there isn't any inherent harm unless you're okay with the potential for getting downvoted and possibly ranted at. Not saying it'll definitely happen, but it might be a sensitive subject.
Or maybe I'm just being a snowflake.

Besides, maybe I could just write 'Nig-' and leave it to the moron reader's imagination (please note 'moron reader' does NOT apply to you or anyone else who follows me on this site, as you won't be reading the story). This is all assuming I'm even bothered to write the story to begin with. I have the idea, but the enthusiasm to write it is another matter entirely.
It really depends on the context, but as long as you're not using it as a deliberate insult toward black people, I wouldn't say it's outright offensive. Uncouth, maybe, but not offensive.

And speaking of 'uncouth', there are a LOT of stories on here that make a lot of views being uncouth. If you can't beat them might as well join them. Trust me; innocence is NOT a word I would use to describe a lot of these stories.

If it upsets you, it might be best not to do the story after all. There is NO intent to cause discomfort or offense to anyone; it was just meant to be a stupid story about Thunderlane testing a ridiculous theory. But you know; even if I tried to write the story I would probably end up not doing it after all due to my crippled enthusiasm for writing.

It's alright now, I've decided not to do that story - I don't care if I upset anyone else, but anybody who follows me who might get offended by the story is a person I will not forgive myself for upsetting. So the fanfic idea has been scrapped.
