Watch Out For Them Scorpion Flies · 4:41pm Jul 30th, 2017

Yes. Scorpion Flies are a thing. That is a scorpion fly in the image above.

They are very common in all parts of the world.

So if you think you are safe just because you live in the northern part of the globe...well...I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but they exist in the northern hemisphere too.

They are essentially on every major continent (for the most part).

Here is what the northern hemisphere flying nightmares looks like.

They sting people with their noses (the tails are actually genitals).

You could literally be sitting anywhere and a flying scorpion could launch itself into your face. <_<

Nature...why you so scary??

The knowledge that these flying terrors are literally everywhere in the world is enough to make me not want to leave the house ever again. :')

4617958 My thoughts exactly. T^T

4617989 I know the feels. T^T

4617992
I hated outside already

This makes it much worse

4617993 And just think; there are worse bugs and creepy-crawly things out there than this. T^T

True. I have to be careful of them, and the normal scorpions. Got to love living in the desert.

4617999 They don't just live in the desert though. They live on every continent, even in the northern hemisphere. They are resilient little buggers. <_<

4618000 Parasites are some of the worst creatures out there. T^T

4618015 And just when you think you are safe in lakes and rivers...there are actually freshwater sharks. <_<

4618027 More like RIP us. T^T

4618029 I know the feels. :raritydespair:

NOPE
NOPE

NopenopenopenopenopenopenopenopeHELLNOPEnopenopenope

Off Bug Spray, a lighter, and a machete is all I need.

Who wants some DAVE!!! :flutterrage:

4618007 True. I don't even try to kill them when I find one in my house. I took a old measuring cup and attached a long wooden stick to it. So when I see one, I can just set it down with having to worry about getting stung. Then I just use a piece of plastic to slide it under, and take it out to a large desert area behind my house. (It makes up an entire block, so It has plenty of room). Just lean over my wall, and I can safely release it.

4618054 I feel the same way. T^T

4618057 We can work together to round up these creepy bugs and drop them off in a place where they can't find their way back to civilization. T^T

4618121 I live in the desert too. We have huge creatures from the underworld crawling around out here. T^T

4618126 I know. I have family in the same town that you live in. (You told me where before, I just don't know if you want it public.)

I never seen one before, but that looks like something comming from a seinen manga.

Umm... Adult mecopterans are actually mostly scavengers, feeding on decaying vegetation and the soft bodies of dead invertebrates. Panorpa raid spider webs to feed on trapped insects and even the spiders themselves, and hangingflies capture flies and moths with their specially modified legs. Some groups consume pollen, nectar, midge larvae, carrion and moss fragments.

They're completely harmless

Also, they're in the same family as fleas!

4618157 That's cool! Do you visit your family out here often?

4618243 It does look like something out of an anime or manga for sure!

4618457 Well I wouldn't say they are completely harmless. They do occasionally 'bite' humans.

Oh, and there is the small fact that their larvae feed on human corpses. :I

4618528 so do a lot of other animals, but it's not EXCLUSIVELY human corpses, it's just carrion in general. nature

4618529 That's very true.

The adult scorpion flies will also eat the flesh of corpses and perform mating dances on them (leaving the larva behind). XD

4618533 You should see what Leopard Slugs do.

It's strangely beautiful...

4618525 Last time I was there had been around...I want to say 13 years ago. Possibly 12. My Sister goes up there about once a year, or every other year though. I'm just not that close with them, like she is.

4618574 Oh, I see. I know how that is. There is always some family you are closer with than others.

4618578 Isn't nature grand? XD
