    Status Update

I'm still around, but have written no words in the last two months or so, and am now, as of this month, 6 months unemployed (with no sign of getting anything anytime soon.)

No words have been written in a while so both stories are kind of in a stuck state.

Growing up has been put up for adoption

    Hey all,
I have decided to go ahead and officially put Growing Up up for adoption. As such, I have added it to the Fanfic Adoption Agency (FAA) group for adoption.

You may also PM me if you wish to adopt it as well so I can take a peek at what stories you've written, and finished.

    Estimating G3 heights part 2

So since the last time I did one of these, someone proposed that I use Santa's door in A Very Minty Christmas to calculate the G3 ponies' heights.

Before we begin, here's an article estimating the G4 pony heights:

Estimating G3 heights part 1 · 3:37am Jul 28th, 2017

How big are the G3 ponies exactly? Because, for the purposes of my G3 story, I assumed they were as big or bigger then then their G4 counterparts. But is this actually true?

So this is the post where I try to channel my inner Mat-pat (Game theorists) and try to find the heights of the G3 ponies.

So, as such, estimating heights by man (or pony) made objects will not be allowed (unless an explicit height is given -- so far I know of no G3 specials that actually do this, so no 8 foot candy canes for me.) This is because all man (or pony) made objects will be scaled to fit their inhabitants, by they 1 ft tall, or 9 ft tall.

Thus we will be attempting to compare ponies heights against natural objects (such as flowers, rocks, trees, etc...)

I found the first such object during the "Friendship and Flowers" song:

In this scene, G3 Moondancer is holding a flower up to her nose to sniff it, thus we can use this flower's height to estimate the height of the G3 ponies.

So the first step is finding out which flower this is. A quick google search turned up the flower I think this is: a Darwin Tulip.

Next we wiki the flower, and get two ranges, one for the old Darwin Tulip (classified under "Single Late"), or the new Darwin Tulip (the so called "Darwin hybrid")

So for the old Darwin Tulip, the maximum height is between 45 and 75 cm (so we'll need to do a metric to english standard conversion later, because I live state side and don't know my CM from my toise de l'Écritoire -- a medieval French measurement.)

and the new Darwin Tulip is between 50 and 70 cm at maximum height.

So next we estimate how high moon dancer is by skipping a few frames ahead till after Zipzee goes flying by, having sniffed one of her flowers.

So I took this in gimp, and drew some straight lines, and did some copy pasting of regions to get the # of flowers from the bottom of her front hoof to her head:

And got 2 flowers...

Well... Not quite... The flowers in this picture are curled slightly. This means, at full height, she's not quite two flowers.

So I'll be estimating both 1.5 flowers, and 2 flowers depending on how concerned I am with the flower's curling.

This means:

That if we use the 1.5 flower estimate I get:

old darwin: 67.5 cm - 112.5 cm
new darwin hybrid: 75 cm - 105 cm

and for the 2 flower estimate I get:

old darwin: 90 cm - 150 cm
new darwin hybrid: 100 cm - 140 cm

So in english standard (because I don't know my cm from my toise -- another medieval French measurement):

1.5 flower estimate:

old darwin: 26.57 in - 44.29 in
new darwin hybrid: 29.53 in - 41.34 in

2 flower estimate:

old darwin: 35.43 in - 59.055 in
new darwin hybrid: 39.37 in - 55.12 in

and in feet:

1.5 flower estimate:

old darwin: 2.21 ft - 3.69 ft
new darwin hybrid: 2.46 ft - 3.45 ft

2 flower estimate:

old darwin: 2.95 ft - 4.92 ft
new darwin hybrid: 3.28 ft - 4.59 ft

Thus, if we either get 2.21 ft to 3.69 ft, 1/2 to a 1 foot smaller then their G4 counterparts, if we try to straighten the curled flower
or 2.95 ft to 4.92 ft, G4 size to 1 foot bigger, if we don't try to uncurl the flower.

So my sibling is using G4 size for his story, which looks like a fair estimate.

What are your thoughts? Did I make any math errors?

Let me know.

Putting them about 4 feet tall seems like a good guess. But, you may want to see how they compare to the doors on Santa's workshop in A Very Minty Christmas... That would give you a way to safely compare their height against a human's height.

Unfortunately, G3 doesn't have a consistent perspective. I've watched the height of G3.5 Scootaloo and G3.5 Sweetie Belle change drastically depending upon the scene.

And actually Rarity is another such case. She acts like she's five, but is only a head smaller then the ponies in most frames...

Except for Greetings from Unicornia, where she's exactly the same size as everyone else. Ditto with some scenes from Come Back Lilly Lightly...
