That sound you just heard is the Internet exploding. · 3:44pm Jul 16th, 2017

BBC has announced the casting choice for the Thirteenth Doctor. The announcement was made through the official Doctor Who Twitter account, via a short video clip.

It is...quite surprising.

After months of rumors that Kris Marshall would be the next Doctor, well...

Let's just say a lot of people who put money on it are going to be VERY pissed. And Twitter is already IMPLODING over this. As you do.

Me? I'll watch and see. It's not like the idea of a female Doctor hasn't been bandied about before.

I mean, we failed to get our first woman POTUS in 2017. At least we can have our first woman Doctor.

EDIT: My response to the Twitter drama over the casting, which...kind of renders all the spoiler tags above moot, but it is what it is:

keep me posted on the implodding

I'll give it a watch.
I like the new Doctor, even if I'm a bit confused now. Even then, I was suddenly made aware of why no one actually likes Twitter.
Christ that was awful.

While I'm not a Doctor Who fan (I know some things about it, but I haven't watched it myself), my dad and sister are, so I showed my dad the choice.
His reaction was, "Oh my god", but more in a semi-amused way.

Dude I had to nuke the column. In 2 minutes two THOUSAND tweets with the #Doctor13 hashtag scrolled past like a blur.

4603150
holy shit i wonder what's it now

4603148
Eh, Twitter is...well, you just have to have a skin of stone and steel to deal with the filth of humanity that swims in the pool. If you can manage that, follow the people worth following, Twitter's the best way to stay informed.

What specifically are you confused about? If it's a woman Doctor, there's precedent. After all, the most recent regeneration of the Master was a woman. If it's why people are losing their shit over this? Gamergate manbabies.

4603151
I dunno, but I'm not opening that hashtag again. It's like the fucking Necronomicon, swear to God...

4603154
was it the good kind of Necronomicon

A female Doctor. Well then. I don't actively follow Doctor Who, but I kinda want to now, if only to see the utter shitstorm that will be the Internet overreacting for better or worse, oh I am going to need ALL the popcorn.

they've shown Gallfreyans can regenerate into the opposite gender, I'm not mad

4603153
I was prepared for the Lost and Damned of the Gamergate.
I wasn't prepared for... I don't know how to call it.
That group that went insulting everyone who said they were confused or doubted.
You are looking way worse that the "Not watching anymore" guy if you start shouting "No one cares!" at everyone who isn't perfectly happy with something that hasn't been done before.

On my end, I expected this to happen after The Master. And with the Doctor being the Doctor, it's not even something permanent so even if you are foaming at the mouth you can just wait it out.

4603170
Yeah, pretty much. I mean...yeah. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the next series. New Doctor, new showrunner, new direction.

I'm not to savvy with the show's lore, bit isn't this supposed to be the Doctor's last reincarnation?

4603183
Not anymore, and things are a bit...muddy. I'll PM you about it to catch you up.

I will stick around. I love Doctor Who, but if they make a big deal out of the Doctor being a woman, I'm leaving.

Any thoughts on Battle for Mewni?

4603157
As long as they don't make a big deal out of it, it should be fine.

I haven seen anything past maybe the second series of this new run.
However making the Doctor female is pretty cool. Something completely new. I bet that she will say something in passing on how this isnt her first time being female.

4603231

It's the INTERNET. Overreaction is to be expected.

4603229
Very mixed thoughts on it. I don't feel like doing a whole blog for it. Mostly, the takeaway is: The wand is fixed, Toffee's dead, and now there's an even worse monster than Toffee about to take over as the series' main villain.

4603240
Toffee's not dead. I won't accept it.

I'm putting everything in spoilers:

IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME! Michelle Gomez has been killing it as Missy, and I can't wait to see how a female Doctor deals with her. Oh, the Foe Yay implications...

For all those butthurt Whovians I'll point out 13 won't even be the first or second Time Lord to switch genders. I believe the Corsair was stated to be male and female in different regenerations, and a few seasons ago, they showed a male Time Lord get killed, fall, then regenerate into a woman. Add to that Missy, and 13 will be the fourth flipped gender Time Lord that we know about.

Hell, I forget which episode, but they foreshadowed this choice. The Doctor was talking to Bill, and he said gender was fluid amongst Time Lords, so the "male" and "female" labels don't mean much to them.

For all the uproar, I'll bet fans will end up loving the new Doctor. Remember the wailing and gnashing of teeth when Peter Capaldi was announced as the Twelfth Doctor? They're the same ones begging him to stay now.

I know little about Jodie Whittaker, but I'll give her a shot. What's funny is she's on Broadchurch acting alongside one of the most beloved Doctors, David Tennant. I'm sure he's already giving her advice on how to deal with everything that goes along with playing The Doctor.

4603183
Long story short, Matt Smith was actually on regeneration 13, even if he was the 11th doctor. There was the War Doctor who was actually regen 9, then 10 used up an extra regen in Journey's End, so 11 was actually 13. Then at the end of Time of the Doctor, the Time Lords (also long story) granted him a new set of regenerations. So he/she's actually got another 11-12 lives left at this point.

4603240
I've already blathered on about the 13th Doctor, but I'll say this about "The Battle for Mewni": There's plenty to talk about.

4603267
Yes, there is, and not all of it good. And I frankly just don't want to write a blog post about it, not when I have a million things to read today, want to get some actual writing done, and have already wasted three hours and change on THIS mess. @_@;;

This will be fun. One question, if this Doctor will be female then will the main companion be a boy?

4603301
I'm thinking the next companion will be a platypus.

In a fedora.

I don't recall there ever being anything in universe that said the doctor couldn't be a woman. It'll be interesting to say the least, though hopefully she'll stick around for longer than her two immediate predecessors, seems like the Eleventh and Twelveth doctors didn't last very long.

4603252
Isn't 10's Master coming up?

About time.

4603318
No, they were around quite a while by revival series standards. No current-era Doctor has had more than three series. David Tennant was series 2-4 and the year of specials, Matt Smith was series 5-7, and Peter Capaldi was Series 8-10. Chances are, Jodie Whittaker will be a three-series Doctor, because that's basically become the pattern now.

Also, even in the classic series, most Doctors were only around for 3-4 years. Tom Baker's seven-year run as the Doctor was an anomaly.

4603340
Define what you mean by "coming up"--series 10's final story brought him back for two episodes as part of the Genesis of the Cybermen story, and had him permanently kill his future self, disrupting her regeneration cycle because he hated that she'd joined sides with the Doctor.

4603506
So, the Master, in essence, commited suicide again?

Kind of funny, I've been working on an idea for a Ranma/Who idea, and now I don't even have to blame it on Jusenkyou...

Whoa! WHOA!!!!!

HOLY SHIT I PREDICTED THIS!!!! I KNEW IT!!! SOMEHOW I KNEW THAT THE NEXT DOCTOR WOULD BE FEMALE!!!!

4603499

Three of them left out of fear of being typecast though only Eccelston lasted for a year whereas the other two went on for a full three years. On the subject of the new Doctor being a woman, I think it's about time that it happened given that they did it with the Master and another Time Lord but what I'm interested in right now is how the regeneration is going to be executed in the Christmas special at the end of the year.

Toy Story world confirmed for KH3, Jeff Goldblum back for the next Jurassic Park, the next Doctor is female. Talk about an exciting weekend.

[squeeing intensifies]

4603237
Pretty sure we have seen all of his regens, so it would be his first time. Definitely won't be all that surprised about it, however.

The other reason that they set a three-year limit is that Baker was starting to get a little nuts towards the end of his tenure. He started to almost think he did have two hearts and a blood temp of sixty, if you catch my drift......

there is a reason why the woman president lost and it has nothing to do with being a woman personally I really don't care what gender the doctor is as long as they don't ruin the character. this doesn't surprise me in the slightest because I know what the BBC has become

4604045
There's a stench coming off of that comment.

Wow. I love that poster. I'm totally reposting that on FB. :)

Also, looking forward to seeing where a female Doctor goes.

From a story perspective, it makes sense. For the last several regenerations, the Doctor has been getting less and less willing to do them. He's got this, "I can't DO this anymore," vibe to him, and addressing it with a total gender change might be the best way to resolve that whole issue.

As long as the doctor is still done well (or at least better than it has been recently) I'm fine with them being female. I just hope they don't ruin 50 years of work by making it awful and blaming the hate on people hating women

4604369
Well, Moffat actually seems to have a good idea (they DO happen) about how to facilitate it, having the weary, reluctant Capaldi Doctor who has been suppressing his regeneration for ages meet a much younger, less world-weary version of himself. (*snrk*...the First Doctor, "younger"...)
