Six Years Ago To The Day... · 6:15am Jul 13th, 2017
Year: 2011
Event: Santa Barbara County Fair, being held in Santa Maria
Cast: Myself, my cousin, and my uncle
It was late that night; the sun had already long since set, and it was almost closing time. My uncle was entertaining my cousin and I while the rest of the family was at the food stands. We'd already ridden most of the rides we wanted to, but still had a few tickets left. So we opted to take the bigger of the two ferris wheels, despite my objections. (Back then, I had quite the fear of heights, which has diminished... mostly... by this point in time.)
After an obnoxiously long wait in line, we wound up being at the head of the line when the preceding run around ended, so we wound up sitting in the gondola at halt while everyone else was loaded up. Sitting up at the top, my uncle took a panoramic photo of the view, my cousin texted someone, and I was busy trying not to think about how high we were or how much the wheel was creaking.
So my Uncle pulled up some of the files on his phone and began showing me a gallery of fanart for some show, describing the characters and going over the basics of their personalities. My cousin seemed loosely familiar with this as well, but if I recall correctly, still wasn't entirely on board with it, not yet anyway.
I was intrigued and wanted to know more, and so after the fair was done and we'd returned to the house, my uncle pulled up Equestria Daily and began explaining about the new My Little Pony reboot that had started in the past year or so, and that it was quite surprisingly good, particularly mentioning the antagonist, Nightmare Moon, and the conflict between she and her sister Celestia.
I was still kind of bewildered by the Pony aspect of things, but he talked it up well, and so later later that night, I gave it a shot.
Take a wild guess whether or not I liked it. Spoilers: I did. A lot. And that led to me having a pretty enjoyable (albeit sometimes frustrating) six years, and growing into a much better writer than I was back then, among other things.
Earlier this evening, my uncle and I (my cousin is regrettably out of town and couldn't join us this time) rode the ferris wheel at the fair again.
I think I should get writing again. This nostalgia is prime fuel for some Contrast.
Pretty cool story. It's nice to look back on the origin of things, isn't it?

Indeed so.
