Bland cliche "Blank Slate" characters are like balls of dough.

You can make them into any shape you want, but if you're the type that needs his/her food to be in a certain shape before he/she can eat it, you're on par with the people that actually eat balls of dough without cooking, seasoning, or anything else. Dough balls take no effort to make, you can make as many as you want as long as you have the ingredients, they're loved by people with no taste, they're stock, and they're easily made by people with no desire or ability to make anything better. You shouldn't subject your taste buds or stomach to bland unseasoned dough balls, you should seek out exotic and interesting things.

Look at video games where the protagonist has an excuse to be a blank slate, because they're the avatars we use to experience the game world. Then notice how the best ones (Doom, Persona 5 Protagonist, and Robin off the top of my head) still have their own personality traits and their own scenes that endear them to us as characters in their own right. Now look at some bland cliche blank-slate character with no personality traits. How lame. Now look at one IN THE FORM OF WRITTEN WORD, WHERE THERE IS NO EXCUSE TO MAKE A BLANK SLATE UNLESS YOU'RE INTENTIONALLY TRYING TO MAKE BLANK SLATE AN ACTUAL CHARACTER TRAIT.
