    For why I'm not updating:

Bought it Tuesday night, promptly spent 26 hours on it in two days, stopping only to sleep and wash clothes.

I had things that needed doing.

    Like building solar panels.

And hydroponics bays to grow food in the winter.

Well Then · 10:35am Jul 4th, 2017

Part of the reason Falling Stars has taken so long to write is because I lost all enjoyment writing for it some time ago. I have been keeping up with it because I was under the belief that people still looked forward to it, still enjoyed reading it.

These last few updates, however, have been filled with complaint after complaint, and now I have been called "stupid" and "lazy" by people I once respected.

I stopped enjoying this some time ago, and now it seems no one else is enjoying it, either. So it's time I stop wasting everyone's time, then.

Wait, what?
<Dashes back and reads the comments>

Oh for the love of...

Rokas, D48 has a stick the size of Pollux up his plot. He, along with some of the other commentators, don't seem to get the idea of human limitations, fallibility, and how habits can come back to bite one in the rear. If it was going to be an easy fight, it wouldn't need the dark tag... I am honestly angered that his comments helped kill one of the best crossover fanfictions I have ever read.

I'm not going to ask you to continue if you no longer enjoy writing. Instead I will let you know that your work has been enjoyed greatly, and the conclusion to such an epic work will be sorely missed. Please, don't let a few sour voices put you off from writing completely.

Wut

I havent read the latest chapters yet, but that really annoys me. If you want to stop I understand. I at least consider it a high quality story.

Dude, if you're not feeling it, then so be it.

But keep in mind that there are at least 722 people who really enjoy this story. And 11,000 and then some views to boot. Surely those numbers matter for something? I really hope you decide to wrap this up with the same level of skill and attention to detail you've shown thus far, instead of letting this excellent story just rot and fade away.

Honestly maybe we aren't as vocal as the annoyances... but there are people out here that still enjoy this work massively... Maybe take a small break? Theres a new battletech game coming out soon that might help get you interested in it again as well. (In the beta for it, and it's awesome so far.)

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/webeharebrained/battletech?ref=discovery

Aside from that if you are just determined to end it... maybe open it up for adoption or collaboration instead? Honestly not sure what to say, other than thanks for what you have written so far, and hope you feel better about things!

this is distressing news! :fluttercry:

Sorry to hear that, I was in again off again with story only reading the latest chapter recently. Still If you want to move on to another story I hope you have a better time with it than this one.

Well... First of all, it makes me really sad, your story is awesome, in my opinion, and I was overjoyed when you posted an update. I was equally terrified when I saw "cancelled" tag.
Either way, if you really lost your motivation to write it further, I can't hold it against you. So, I just wanted to say, Thank you. It was great, and I hope against hope that someday you will update it.

Well damn it, there goes one of the best storys on the site which is a real pity as your writing is really good and the latest chapters laid out a complex situation really well.

It's a real pity that you no longer enjoy writing it, but if you feel that you have to drop it then you had best do so. I'll just keep hoping that you'll come back to it and finish it someday.

Thank you for what you have written so far and please don't let the opinions of a group who don't understand the trouble you have gone to in writing this story spoil your enjoyment of writing as you are quite good.

I stopped enjoying this some time ago

Honestly, this sounds like the real problem to me. If you aren't enjoying your writing the quality will inevitably suffer as a result, and this is supposed to be a hobby you do for fun, not a chore so it really doesn't make sense to force yourself to do it if you aren't enjoying it. In all honesty, you probably would have been happier if you had recognized that and pulled the plug then, but I definitely understand why you are making this decision.

This is why i never start reading stories before they're finished. While i haven't read the story (and i am thankful for that now), i did add it to my "to read"-folder. I really enjoyed The Thessalonica Legacy and was pleasantly surprised to find another Battletech crossover with the right tags and a decent length. I can understand not being motivated to write. That's me with every creative endeavour, including writing. Having fun doing this is the exception for me, but having finished something and seeing people enjoying it is worth it for me.

I don't know what transpired to elicit this reaction, but i'm having trouble believing that you're "wasting everyone's time" here. The loud ones tend to be minorities.

What this time?
(no comments when I read the chapter)

Wow. Lots of gripes but aside from 1 (not the usual one either) no one is wanting it to stop.

Interesting trend on this site you need to be aware of Rokas.

The better the story, the more complaints. That's because people care about the well written stuff and want it to get better. Whereas the crack fics? No one expects anything from them.

It's a shame all the good sci-fi fics I read die horrible deaths god damn climaxes.

Sorry to see this one go but if you don't enjoy writing it then don't force yourself to do it, lots of us enjoyed reading it but we wouldn't want you to be dragging yourself through hoops for it.

I loved reading Falling Stars: it was very well executed technically, it was interesting as well and I think you underestimate the number of people interested in seeing new updates but I can also absolutely understand not wanting to continue a story that you're no longer interested in and I would in fact suggest that you at least take a break if you weren't already cancelling it.

tl;dr - The fact that you no longer enjoy writing it is reason enough to stop writing; we understand and most of us won't raise a fuss but we will miss the story.

It saddens me that you'd quit because of the haters, although that just seems like an excuse to me. Still, I won't judge you. You lost your drive to write, and not everyone is strong enough to keep up their stories after that. I know I'm not, so at least I can relate.

I'm not very optimistic about future updates, but I'll keep tracking the story just in case. There'll always be a small glimmer of hope left. It would be a shame to leave such a promising story in the 'hopeless tracking' folder forever, after all. :trixieshiftright:

Well this is saddening to hear:fluttercry:. But I must agree with D48, If your not happy stop. That being said know that I have enjoyed your work immensely. To the point of having re-read it start to finish literally over 20 times since I found it way back when. It helped me keep what little sanity I had, back when I only had access to the web for an hour once a week. While others may choose to leave if they so wish. I shall be waiting quietly here if ever you so decide to dust it off.:rainbowdetermined2:

Hi there Rokas. I have been a quiet fan of this story for many years now. I am sorry to hear that it doesn't give you as much enjoyment writing this story as it has given me reading it over the years.

But I do want to say please don't let a few trolls take anything away from you or the other fans of this story. i am sure there are hundreds of fans like myself that are quietly and hopefully waiting for the next update from you.

I think this story is excellent, and i for one hope you continue it. Thank you for sharing this awesome work with us Rokas!

As with alot of people posting, I am sorry you feel this way about writing this story but I will continue to have it in my watch list and hope strongly that it gets a proper conclusion in the future.

As a content producer I know the disgruntled folks are the loud ones. Heck, civility often isn't required nor is criticism delivered in a manner that you would dare to deliver in the same way face to face. They are often very loud and drowning out any of the people telling you they like what you produce. Heck, people tend to voice dissatisfaction more often than satisfaction in on line media.

It saddens me that a couple of vocal folks in a comment section on the story managed to dissuade you from continuing. You have one of the more unique and well written crossovers on fimfiction. I would love to see this story continue to its conclusion. The amount of feedback you got on your Necromancy is a solid indication that people are paying attention and want to see this continue.

Still it's your decision to continue or not. Especially if you're not enjoying it at the moment. However, ignoring what's going on in the comment section is an option. Just my two cents on the current kerfuffle in the comment section.

Right. Who is the stravag freebirth that ruined this masterpiece for you? This story got me into battletech, it opened my eyes to the wondorous background that it had to offer The intrigue, the honour battles, the in depth story! You have every right to your decision, but I implore you to reconsider. Just know that you are one of the greats on this site! It is rare that I find a crossover fic that is so well written! (and avoids the cringy zoophilia that the hacks slip in) You just keep being you, mate. And Thank you.
i.warosu.org/data/tg/img/0280/48/1383443331083.jpg

Although I respect your decision, I do hope you reconsider. This fic, nay, this world you've created is both vast and filled with wonder and mystery. And, as a fellow writer, I can understand how you can feel tired about writing. I myself have been plagued by this too. There is nothing wrong with this, it just means you need to take a step back and take some time enjoying other things in life. Of course, having other people criticize you just because they don't agree with something you do with your own creation is never a nice thing. Unfortunately, it is something everyone has to deal with. (Seriously, you should've seen the negative responses Knighty got after the latest site update.)

Now, although I understand your choice to put an end to this wonderful fic of yours, I, as well as most others who've left a comment here, do hope you will pick up your figurative pen and continue entertaining us with your imagination and the story you first set out to tell. You may not update often, but you do update, and that is more than I can say about most other fics in my library. And when you do update, it is an entirely new expansion of this world, disguised as a chapter for this wondrous gift you've given us.

I wish you the best of luck with any future endeavors. Be it with this fic, or something new.

that's too bad. This was one of the few fics I look forward to reading.

Damn, so sorry to hear you lost your writing drive. This story was one of the best I have read on this site. Let me also apologize for those who shout hateful things for no reason other than to make themselves feel important. I truly do hope you are able to find your drive again. Also if you ever want to talk, message me. I know a few things about getting hurtful story comments. Hope to see more writing from you sometime.

Well that's disappointing. It's your choice to make, but I hope you reconsider at some point.

Wow, I don't know what to say to this. I was just using this story the other day as an example to a friend of a truly great battle sequence in written fiction, an example for others to follow, and now I come back after a week of work to find out that it's been cancelled. That's . . . sad. It's sad is what it is, and I can't help but find some shame on the part of myself for not commenting when I had just finished the chapter after it was posted and instead going to bed. :fluttercry:

What's even sadder is that this is the second or third great story you've cancelled because of negative feedback in the comments section, and I'm fairly certain it's the same jerk every time. :trixieshiftleft: I can only hope this doesn't happen in the future and comment on every new story you post from here on out. Because whatever you might think, sir, you do have a lot of people out there who love your work.

I've been a fan of your stuff since you first released Shadows of Man all those years back. The first Battletech fanfic I can remember reading in fact. It would be rather difficult for me to not enjoy your stories, new or old.

Still, that's me. Not you. If it's not fun for you anymore, whether people like it or not, just stop. Continuing to work on something like that would likely just make you hate it in the long run, and that's worse.

Don't think you aren't good at what you do though.

And if you ever decide to get back into writing, even if in another series, maybe leave a link?

Serioisly, I enjoy this story. It would be a shame to leave it unfinished. My advice is to take a step back, take a deep breath and block the critics. They can't say anything nice, well to hell with them. Some of us really want to see how it ends!

Even though this story was not finished I am still glad that I found it

Thank you
