Not exactly all it's cracked up to be.
I mean, I have had a major toothache for a few days, but I don't have any money or medical insurance. So... not sure what to do. I think there's a dentist office in walking distance, but I don't know if I can just walk in and pay later...?
If it's a mom and pop shop, be up front, ask if they'll still see you. Alternatively, buy some novacaine from a pharmacy and apply as needed.
Never hurts to ask.
Are there any dental schools in your area?
Do you live close to Mexico? Many, many people take "dental vacations" to low cost clinics there, with well trained dentists.
... have you got some string and a door knob?

Dental schools are indeed a good idea.
But remember, the worst thing you can do, masterweaver, is to do nothing, as the problem will just get worse (and more expensive), if its not treated. (speaking from personal experience)
For added reference, I do not have a car.

I agree. Most dentists will let you pay later. Most oral surgeons will insist on cash up front. Take care of it while it's still a problem for a dentist.
I know some offices use services like CareCredit that let you finance the cost of your visit and pay over time, usually interest free if payed off on time (6 or 12 month). At least hear in NJ many of the doctor, dentists and vets have this service now. I would go online and find all the dentists in walking distance from you, call them and ask there prices and if they offer and pay over time services. Hope your tooth feels better.

But you have a phone and can call around, yes? If necessary, do you have a friend who can drive you somewhere if needed?
Also, what city do you live in? Maybe one of your followers could provide a ride or two.
