So, last week we covered Windows. This week we're covering Linux. And Linux servers don't come with graphical user interfaces, so you have to type everything out. And this is supposedly the greatest operating system in the world. Personally, I'll stick to Windows.
Haven't done anything with Blueblood, though I have finished my preliminary research for the Popes. It was quite the read. Now I've got to go through and get a draft together before I do more in-depth (where possible) research. Also, given my attempts to get the job I'm hoping for are so far coming to nothing, I'm working on another project so I can hopefully sell it to a publisher. It's the story of a man who is taken into the future to become Pope (no, I had this idea before I started research, it just came up). Since the universe this is set in has a massive canon I'm working out (that begins about 180 years ago), this means getting the nitty-gritty down in advance. Right now I'm up to 1891. Spoiler, there's going to be a big divergence from history around 2015.
I had more, but I forgot what I was going to say. So, here's until the next blog post.
Linux should have a GUI; most flavors of it do. If they're using a flavor of Linux without a GUI, then they'd better have a good reason.
That said, for operating servers, Linux generally is the best if only because it's extremely powerful and gives a lot of control to the admin. Maybe too much.
Other systems have been catching up, though, and generally the only real benefit that Linux has over a lot of them is that it's free or nearly free. If you don't need support for certain software or peripherals, then it's not a problem I guess.

Yeah, Ubuntu server doesn't come with a GUI. You can install one, but that still seems like a step too many.
And yeah, looking at the statistics, I have to agree that Linux makes for a good system. My preference for Windows is mostly out of sentiment and the fact that it's still a perfectly solid system for anyone who doesn't make basic mistakes on it. I don't even mind paying for it, though I am a little peeved that Microsoft Office requires a subscription.
