Equestria Girls Special: "Mirror Magic" Review

Ok, this is my last blog review of the "recent" Equestria Girl specials. Sorry that it's been awhile since my last post... but it was my birthday the other day so I took a few days. In fact, one of my presents was the "Legends of Everfree" movie DVD. However, that is going off topic. I got some opinions and thoughts I want to tell you all about.

Equestria Girls Special: "Movie Magic" Review · 2:56am Jun 14th, 2017

Ok, I think it's time to post my next review blog on the recent Equestria Girls specials. Actually, the morning after I post my first blog review on "Dance Magic" [which you can read here], Dr Wolf uploaded his video review on Dance Magic too. I thought I would be competing with the good doc' to see who can get his opinion out first, but it looks like he is taking his time with it. Oh well, here's my review on "Movie Magic"😎

Note: while I try to keep spoilers too a minimum, there will be stuff that I want to talk about.

Premise

Rainbow Dash and the Hu-Mane 7 got invited to view the filming of Daring Do's movie. How? Well the director; Canter Zoom (That sounds like a name for a Flash villain) was a camper of Camp Everfree and her want to show his appreciation for saving the camp (Wow! The girls were so lucky that it almost border on being contrived). Anyway, during production, three important props for the movie had gotten stolen and so progress for the movie had to halt. Why can't they make new ones? Well apparently they have to get approved by "A.K. Yearling" in order for them to use them and nobody can get in contact with her at the moment. (Ok, I got 2 questions. 1. Why do you have to get A.k. Yearling's thumps-up in order to shot the movie with them? And 2. Is this A.k. Yearling anything like her pony counterpart in Equestria and she's Indiana Jones-ing-it in her main job?). With the movie on halt, will our main heroines find and return the props in time? (short answer: yes. Long answer: I'm gunna explain).

Thoughts

Ok, you might get my impression of the initial set up of the premise. It's a miracle that a former camper from Camp Everfree happens to be a movie director and feels thankful enough for the girls to invite them as guests for the Daring Do movie that he's directing. Like, one or more of those girls must have been under a lucky star to get this luxurious privilege. But then again, it's far more believable then the plot synopsis that was release a few month/weeks ago where A.K. Yearling herself invited the girls (because it would ask the question on how they met her to begin with). If it were me who wrote this, I would have it tie it in the last special; "Dance Magic" and an extra perk to winning the music video contest is tickets to the movie studio. But hay, that is just me.

When the props got stolen, it sort of became a mystery fic' to find the culprit. Honestly, I think this was a better mystery episode then the one on the pony show (MMMystery on the Friendship Express). There was actual clues scattered about that the audience and characters could see and it gives you the freedom to guess on who done it. And while there is a red herring character that un-savvy viewers might suspect, none of the characters pointed their finger towards them and simply left it as a possibility. Heck, they even made it really tempting to suspect them because of a clue that they told us.

However, if you already seen the 3rd special or read it's plot synopsis (like I happen to be), you are spoiled on who the actual culprit is. And while I sad to spoiled myself before watching this special, I was still really surprised about the character herself.Juniper Montage, the director's niece and stagehand, was a really nice character and a delight to watch and see. You almost feel bad for her that she end up as the villain. Seeing on what she would become was heartbreaking and almost jarring to say the least.

And now for the rest of the episode that was a delight to watch. The whole thing is set in a film studio and so you can get many interesting backgrounds and set pieces. The three stolen props, when you see them, makes you think that they are actual artifacts that A.K. Yearling is just loaning to the studio to make the movie about her. Even the different movie sets makes you feel that the girls were teleported to a different location. My only real grip with the setting were two things. 1st: At one point, the Hu-Mane 7 enter the set for "Stormy with A Side of Pudding" (...yeah) and the pudding that they use is actual pudding (:rainbowderp:). And 2nd: The girls gets mistaken for actresses for the "Power Ponies" movie and got put into superhero costumes (What!? :rainbowhuh:). It came out of nowhere, doesn't makes much sense and doesn't serve much purpose. However, it did serve to make a joke that the stagehand who mistook them getting fired and it did put the girls in nice skintight outfits.

:twilightoops:

Yes, I'm a bit of a perv'.

Final Thoughts

Honestly, this is way better then the last one. If the last special wasn't "fantastic" for you, then this episode should scratch you "fantastic" itch. The scenes are creative, the plot was intriguing and the characters were endearing. I think this might be the best of the three specials. However, that should wait for another time. Service to say, fans for both Equestria Girls and Friendship is Magic should watch this.

Comeback next time for the review for the last Equestria Girls Special: "Mirror Magic" (staring the meeting between of Sunset Shimmer and Starlight Glimmer)
