In order to run older 16-bit applications, Windows includes an "NTVDM" subsystem in 32-bit versions to provide a simulated DOS interface that's presented to the software. Similarly, in 64-bit Windows, the NTVDM simulates a 32-bit system for compatibility, dropping support for 16-bit programs in the process.
The Apple Lisa, while ultimately being a huge flop on Apple's behalf, was eventually able to be converted into a Macintosh compatible computer using various hardware and software mods.
I never knew that could be compatible.
