Review #108 - The Twilight Enigma · 12:03am May 25th, 2017

I started writing this in time for Tuesday's review, but then stuff happened. Sorry for the lateness.

Oh, and go join this writing challenge group. No, really, go join. I've even joined...

*All word usage in this blog is intentional and me being silly, just in case you don't know why I use things like "romance-y."

The Twilight Enigma by iisaw
This is a sequel to The Luna Cypher, which I reviewed here.
(Adventure, Dark)
Twilight sets out to learn more of the ways of the world, and soon decides that the whole planet is disorganized, insanely dangerous, and desperately needs to be fixed. And she's just the mare to do it... with a little help from her friends. Also, there are sky-pirates!

Review
Is that an awesome description, or is that an awesome description. This one is an adventure story, but it includes a lot darker themes than the previous installments. There is also a substantial decrease in mystery. Anyway, Twilight has had some character growth since The Luna Cypher. However, since this does a little of the back-and-forth style chapters, it is hard to judge specific character traits. Nonetheless, I shall try. First off, she's grown in magical talent, and as such, is able to do stuff like give people the plague. And speaking of the plague, she gives somepony the heckin plague... and is totally okay with killing ponies. And while I really shouldn't be surprised by that because of The Luna Cypher's elements, it is quite jarring. Fluttershy, who I want to talk about next, is perfect as an airship captain. Not only perfect, but adorable in the way she "speaks" with the ship. Rarity did seem a little overdone as the romance-y master duelist, but it was not too bad. Rainbow, Applejack, and Pinkie I don't even remember, and I'm not gonna re-read the whole thing... at this time, anyway. There are many more characters to look at, but I don't have the time nor space. So, stuff I liked. AIRSHIPS!!!! Need I say any more?

And it is a crime a story like this has a weakness. But alas, it does. And that weakness is how untied-together the plot is. Unlike the previous stories, where all the little problems came together to reveal a large one, this one has two separate little problems, which Twilight solves, and then a world-ending problem, completely unrelated to the earlier problems. Also, it's basically all action sequences. Not that I don't love airship battles, but it can get to be a bit much at times.

Recommendation: Recommended. (Even though it has the weakness mentioned above, it is still a really good story. Especially if you like airships).

P.S.: If you happen to know any airship stories that are not in THIS GROUP, please tell me what they are. I will love you forever.

Thank you for the review!

Very well. While that group does have The Dusk Guard: Rise, which has the airship The Hummingbird, it does not feature the sequel, Beyond the Borderlands, which has airship fleets going to war with one another in massive air battles.

You're welcome!

I have to admit I would have liked about 30 more chapters of this just about epic airship pirate battles. :pinkiehappy:

I'm aware this blog post is like 4 years old but... Does anyone know how to actually view the story? When I click the link it takes me to a page where I need to enter a password apparently. Never seen anything like it before.

Also The Luna Cypher just gives a 404 error and The Skyla Pseudonym just doesn't exist

If you go to the tvtropes page for the series, it links to an actually readable copy
