Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

Sucks to Your Cheerimac [episode spoilers!] · 1:21pm May 14th, 2017

My friends from Baltimore drove in yesterday, so I didn't get to watch the episode and may be rather incommunicado all week. :B

This is possibly my least favorite kind of episode: a cringe comedy that really nails the moral. Because now I have to talk about how good that part is instead of writing it off and never, ever watching it again because I don't think I could sit through this episode again. c.c It was painful.

Seriously, every cockamamie plan the Crusaders put Big Mac through was worse than the last, and the song with hipster Mandopony (major props to Vincent "Flash Sentry" Tong in his best role ever) was just the worst. At least it slowly became obvious during that sequence that Sugar Belle was not having any of it, but it didn't help that we, the viewers, had to endure alongside her. D:

Still, the "romance isn't like fairy tales" ending is so incredibly important, and the fact that I believe so strongly in that is why this episode was terribly hard to watch. :( It doesn't help that A) the show writers seem to think shipping Big Mac with random mares is a good idea, and B) the CMCs were involved again. Though with that said, post-Hearts and Hooves Day Cheerimac can fuck right off with canon. :D I win! The love potion didn't unlock something simmering deep within them, it didn't lead to any kind of long-term relationship, you don't force people to love each other, goddammit. D:< And the same "romance is best left to adults" moral from that episode applies here as well. Just don't make me watch it again. c.c;

Sugar Belle is super-cute tho. :B

I found it a bit more watchable, mostly because I frequently paused the action and went to do anything else. Good moral, some fun cringe jokes, and much bedroom eyes.

Yeah, I frequently paused the action and left to decompress from the awful. D: Not quite the same thing.

It took me 3.5 hours to watch this shit. This is by far the worst episode in the entire series. Far too much cringe and stupidity.

Every time I saw Feather Bangs, I wanted to punch him in the face. 10/10 on character design conveying personality, but intentionally obnoxious is still obnoxious.

I actually found this less cringey than Forever Filly, for some reason. Does that make me strange?

I'm pretty much in agreement with this: I really hated the cringe, but loved the moral. I also loved the CMCs' spy antics, though. "Spyrate!", "Quick! Act like apples!", and "It was a long ride!" were hilarious.

Only one of many.

I do agree, even though the episode had its moments, I actually laugh watching how awful both CMC and Feather plans were failing when Sugar showing she didn't want any of it.

The moral was amazing because romance isn't a fairytale at all but is a step above friendship and special.

I'm glad Hasbro choose their own ship before anyone thought of SugMac.

It's definitely an important moral, but contained in one of the shittiest and most boring episodes of the entire show.

... that seems to be par for the course for this season.

This was one of the cases where I've appreciated cringe more than normal. Sure, it's exaggerating things, but it doesn't rely on someone important being cringey (for example, various Rainbow episodes) or putting up with cringe-iness (re: Flutterbrother) all the time. But this is an area some people are just not very good at operating in, and others treat like a game. So I get where this is coming from, and the whole desire for a shortcut around the process of opening up and everything. And this is an episode where I think the cringe reinforces the point very well, and the target audience is particularly relevant; 8-10 year-olds haven't really been through this, and are going to be much more like the CMCs in that their experience has been mostly through stories rather than personal experience or even watching relationships grow or die with a developed and critical mind.

Also, seeing this has me wondering if they'll do something with I like you, but not like that at some point. Aside from any chemical-induced Hearts and Hooves nonsense, of course.

Like Flutter Brutter, I think the cringe kind of reinforced the plot. It wouldn't have been the same without it, and frankly, painful cringe has become par for the course. I enjoyed a focus on minor characters, I loved the CMC's vaguely self-aware commentary ("That's OUR metaphorical sunset he's riding into!"). True to morals, the characters didn't run like a fairy tale as well either - Bieberpony ended up being an okay guy, and really saved Mac from an awkward moment with the kiss. And Sugar Belle was a working girl who gave no fucks about the posturing around her.

My biggest complaint is that it should've been Marble, with the zealously protective Limestone playing the antagonist. Would've been a nice bit of continuity.

Still, I do hope this leads to more fun with Starlight's village (sans Starlight).

I'm right there with you on this episode. Great moral... eventually. :ajbemused:

I hate cringe comedy, and I'm really concerned that we're getting so much of it this season. Yes, it's much easier to write than real comedy, but c'mon! One of the things that really set this show apart from others is that everybody involved brought their A-game.

A) the show writers seem to think shipping Big Mac with random mares is a good idea

That's what this fandom is built on you madman! When the song started I was worried it would be cringy, but I thought it was just plain funny. The most cringy parts were the CMC costumes.

This is probably the most cringe inducing episode I think I've seen. I had to stop the episode at least three times to prevent myself from completely skeeving out. There needs to be an Equestria-wide ban on the CMCs from interfering in romantic affairs.

Oh, it most definitely did. I don't have to like it, but it was done in service of the moral.

And no, MarbleMac is a crap ship because they might be related and it's not so much that they might be related as Pinkie Pie won't shut up about the fact that they might be related and this invalidates any arguments about distance of relation!

We could make that the "Pinkie Pie, shut up" episode instead of giving it to fucking Starlight Glimmer.

And besides, it would have meant seeing Limestone again...

Nah, I saw it first hand over on your blog. :B I'd say it's embarrassing, but I've been mad about the show for about six years now, so I'm hardly one to talk. D:
