Headin' to EFNW! · 2:37am May 10th, 2017
This year I am committed to only one panel: Characterizing Characters, in Twilight's Writing Room, at 2:15 Friday. This is probably for the best, as standing up in front of people pretending to know something gives me the heebie-jeebies, increasingly, every year. It was better when I had the delusion that I actually did know something.
Anyway, hope to see you there!
Have fun!
You know something.
I'll be there in spirit, amigo.
Hope to see you there, as well!
Well:
Horizon is fairly tall, and he's going to be at the same convention. Perhaps you could make arrangements to hide behind him if it becomes necessary.
That Ever-Helpful Mike Guy
What a shame that I won't be able to attend =/ Gotta stay in town for work. Have fun there!
I suppose the delusion passed from you to us. What a shame.
Have fun!

This is my go-to strategy, yes.

Thank you.
Let me just observe that pubic speaking (or even just performing) is a useful skill to have (more or less regardless of job, vocations or nonwork activities). You never know when you might have to do it for something or other (and not always for the bext circumstances), so it's useful to do it and not let it overwhelm you or worry you too much.
I speak from experience: I lectured a couple of times (on military history) at my (admittedly small) school at about fourteen and I've done panto for... closer to thirty and than twenty-five years, let alone the university presentations and whatnot. The more you do it, the easier it should get. ("Should" being the operative word.)
Good luck.

Indeed it is! I do not have crippling anxiety or anything being in front of a crowd, so it's not traditional stage fright. It's just my old buddy Impostor Syndrome hanging around.

Then let me remind you that "professionals" (I.e. people for example, get stuff published in hard-copy media on the high street or something) are not necessarily actually better than keen enthusiasts[1] or of us whose day-job is entirely online; regarding writing specifically, the Pratchetts of the world (*tips helmet to the stars*) might be perhaps, but the majority, not so much.
You should not have any concerns either way, my friend. You are not a changeling just waiting for someone to discover you are faking it; you have plenty of skill and talent to be proud of.
(Heck, in some cases, the professional industry literally could not afford the brainpower in some areas; Maneouvre Group wargames rules (WW2-2010 - and onwards) was written over the course of several years and hundreds of manhours by two top-level engineers (one of whom was (at the time, he's retired now) a professional mathmatical modeller and world expert in his small field); whose salaries places like, say even Wizards of the Coast likely couldn't afford, let alone the cottage industry wargaming in general.)
[1]Example: much of the comic book industry.

Thanks for the kind words.
4526930 and he does Tarot readings!

Can confirm. Assuming you fix the typo where you omitted the word "yet".
Completely unrelatedly, I support 4526930's suggestion of hiding behind me the entire convention. Especially in dark areas with nopony else around.

This is a plan that requires alcohol.
I do not anticipate that being a problem.
4527480 I hope not! :D
Aw man, the middle of the day! I have a helper this time though, so hopefully I can pop in to see you characterize yourself.
4528380
If not, I'll swing by and see ya at least!
Just remember that the amount of stress you have about any one panel has no influence on the quality of the panel itself.
Anyway, hope you have fun at the con all the cool people are at!

Cool people except me!
I'm just going to leave my phone number on all these EFNW posts: 714-496-3119 hit me up if you want to hang out or know where I am so you can avoid me.
