Live Action anime movies · 10:10pm May 9th, 2017

I'm aware this becoming a thing more and more, as to why I have no Celestial clue. And so far, all of the live action anime film adaptations have either been terrible or subpar. However, if care is paid to the source material that doesn't have to happen. One series I think would be amusing, if done well, in a live action format is Assassination Classroom.

Thoughts?

But Assassination Classroom already HAS a live-action adaptation movie.

4527006 I was unaware of that, I'm guessing it's not all that good on account that seems to be a trend.

4527015 I wouldn't know. I haven't seen it. I only know it exists because I've seen the DVD on the shelves and read the case. I'm hesitant to watch it because I don't want to have to hate it, but I also really want to see it, because I like Koro Sensei.

4527044 Ditto. Onto to other things, Ghost in the Shell took a hit when it was translated to live-action. I'm a fan of the original Ghost in the Shell movie, in fact, I have a copy in my personal collection, but I haven't really seen the live-action version, but I've seen some reviews and from those alone, I can tell it took some major blows. Some of the anime reviewers I watch on Youtube came back with the word that Hollywood Frankensteined different continuities of the series together to make it fit a few things in their vision of the pallets American movie goers. A couple said that at the very least it was "a step in the right direction" and if a well-loved series needs to take those kinds of hits for the team then it's at least a step in the right direction.

4527051 I'd have to say that the fact they used aspects from different continuities is really more the fault of the fact that there ARE multiple continuities.

4527057 True, but in terms of most of the series, I'm deliberately excluding Aris3, all the continuities fell nicely into each other and felt like a sort of interconnected set of seemingly separate continuities. In my opinion, Aris3 messed up all the cohesion between continuities. Before then the movies and anime series felt very much like they all fit together like pieces of a puzzle. The problem with the live-action film, which starred Scarlet Johanson as the Major, is that it tried to blend all the continuities together, including Aris3, while also trying to give the film a clear antagonist, which was ripped from a different set of plot lines in the series, while seeming to stick to the majority of the first film's plot. In short, a bit of a mess.

4527070 That's my point. They were trying to work in too many aspects from something intended to be drawn out with multiple variations.
They screwed themselves over from the start.

Honestly, if they were going to do an American live-action adaptation of any given anime, the one they SHOULD do, and this is just my personal opinion, is Trigun. It's got a single, consistent storyline with little to no variation from what it was trying to do from the start.
The sole exception of it being the movie, Badlands Rumble, which was made around ten years after the anime first aired and I have no idea where it fits into the show's timeline.
If they adapted that, they could film it anywhere from the American deserts, to the deserts here in Australia, most props would be guns, with revolvers most prominent, and the few outlandish-looking ones would still be easy for a professional prop-maker to produce, and it still has plenty of room for special effects, which if they work them right could turn out REALLY epic.

4527123 I'm with you there, Trigun is incredible and its progression isn't bogged down with offshoots. Another good one they could work with, in that it has no real variations, is Cowboy Bebop, and due to the structure of the series as a whole they could start from any point and move and jump around a bit and still, for the most part, it would work well. I actually first was introduced to Cowboy Bebop through the movie, which takes place between episodes. A live-action Cowboy Bebop would be nice to see, assuming it was treated properly.

4527124 They'd have to either animate or get a specially trained Corgi to do the scene of Ein on shrooms.
I CAN'T accept the idea of a live-action Cowboy Bebop without that scene.

At the very least, though, with Ghost in the Shell, they used writers and a director who were familiar, at least partially, with the shows.
We saw what happens when a director NOT familiar tries to do an anime-based movie. and we can all agree the Dragon Ball Evolution should be shunned because of it.
Seriously, who thought it would be a good idea to get a director who had NEVER seen the show or manga to direct a Dragon Ball movie?
Even M. Night Shyamalan's take on the Last Airbender, as terrible as it was, was more accurate than that load of shit.

4527186 All true, the whole reason the live-action anime films are being made is because Hollywood has recently recognized these things as having a massive fan base. But that's just it, if you're not making a film the fans, and by proxy those they drag along into the theater, can enjoy then you're missing some of the points to making film in the first place. Instead of trying to get across to a general audience they should be trying to target the niche audiences, they'd definitely do better at seeing returns on their investments.

4527232 Not to mention that it can bring new people into the niche audience, and potentially pull it into greater attention and be taken more seriously by other production companies and would in turn lead to more fan-focused anime movies and open up an entire new demographic which would bring more money to the production companies.

Credit where it's due for Ghost in the Shell, they TRIED to do just that. They may have failed miserably, but they at least had the sense to TRY. They should have gone for something more consistent though.

4527425 True, Outlaw Star or Cowboy Bebop or Trigun would have all been better choices, because of the fact everything is there in one continuity. Hell, even the goofiness that is Haruhi Suzamia has a a singular continuity.

4527467 As strange as it is to say, they could have used ONE PIECE to better effect with its continuity.
...
Which if I actually think about, COULD make for a pretty epic live-action movie, surprisingly.

4527473 no arguments there

4527473 Pirates never seem to ever really go out of style. That said, a live-action Naruto, while potentially cool looking, probably wouldn't be a good idea.

4528682 That would largely depend on WHEN they set it. I honestly wouldn't mind seeing a live-action adaptation of the events leading up to Naruto's birth, with Kurama destroying the lands around Konoha and such, and maybe a few other, similar scenarios, but for the actual part of it that focuses on Naruto himself, it COULD be done right, but I'd say that would be best done live-action in the form of a show, like how Marvel's doing Luke Cage and the Iron Fist on Netflix.
Same goes for a live-action of the main One Piece storyline, Dragon Ball and Fairy Tail.

4528700 Agreed, major events like One Piece's Impel Down arc, Fairy Tail's Battle of Fairy Tail arc and the like could make for some decent cinematic events, but the bulk of the series as individual episodes would work much better.

4528813 Precisely.

Also, I've been thinking on who'd be the best actor for Vash.
I keep coming to Ryan Reynolds. I think it's his seemingly large forehead that makes him the one I think would be the best Vash.

4529397 Think of the character's personality then go back through the available actor pool and think of who could best play a character with Vash's personality. Vash is a well-meaning goofball in terms of personality. I will admit Ryan Reynolds would probably be a good choice due to the range of capabilities he has as an actor. But once again, it comes down to who is best get playing the character's personality.

4529426 Even factoring in personality, I keep coming to Ryan Reynolds. He can pull off the anger that Vash goes through at times, but I wouldn't mind seeing him try for Vash's emotional trauma.
The real question is, 'Who'd make a good Wolfwood?'

4529446 True, Wolfwood is kind of hard to nail down. Question, would be better for the actor who plays Vash to also take on the part of Knives (assuming he's in the film) or would it be better to have someone else play Knives.

4529449 I'd say go for someone else.
I can see someone like Sam Worthington playing Knives.

4529466 I don't know, I really haven't seen much of his work so I can't really say much in the way of his acting ability. But Knives needs someone who's a likable sociopath, but also someone you love to hate. Honestly speaking, Knives is probably a difficult personality to pull off.

4529467 The problem is that the best actors to play the sociopaths are too old to pass for the character.

Also, Sam Worthington is the Australian actor from Clash of the Titans and Avatar.

4529611 I watched Avatar, skipped on the Clash of the Titans remake though. Who do you think would be a good fit for the Insurance ladies?

4529617 I'm a big fan o Clash of the Titans, both the original and the newer one, but they're really almost completely different storylines, with the new one making references to the original, mostly with the mechanical owl. I do recommend seeing it. Liam Neeson as Zeus was wicked.

I've also been thinking that maybe Mark Wahlberg could suit Nicholas Wolfwood.

Either Rose Byrne or Anne Hathaway for Meryl. Byrne's got the serious demeanour down with that occasional silly/goofy moment. Just watch her role in Spy.
Hathaway's much the same, but her serious roles are notably less comical, so I think she'd be the better choice. Her role in The Dark Knight Rises is the best example of her having the slightly playful side while being predominantly serious.

As for Miss Millie Thompson... I have no idea.
The only actress I can think of who could pull her off hasn't had any big budget acting roles. In fact the only actual MOVIE I think she's in was only as a cameo. Barbara Dunkleman of Rooster Teeth Productions. She's done voices for various anime, including Cosmos in Fairy Tail, and most prominently Yang Xiao-Long in RWBY. I'd say the only issue with her though is her voice isn't quite high-pitched enough, but that holds no real relevance when making live-action adaptations.

4529643 on to a different series, who do you think would be a good fit for One Piece? I've read and heard of statements comparing Franky to Jim Carrey or being based on him to some capacity.

4529655 Chris Hemsworth for Zoro, Chopper should be animated and his dub VA kept on for him, animated mapping of Jim Carey's face for Franky and possibly use him for the VA, but only if they can't get his regular.

I'm not even going to try to think of who'd suit Luffy, Usopp, Nami and Robin right now, but Sabo should be in it and played by Liam Hemsworth.

4529668 Where do you think the whole thing should start? Kid Luffy being an idiot and cutting his face then eating the Devil Fruit or with most of the crew already assembled?

4529703 I'd say start it EXACTLY where the show does. Luffy in a barrel.

4529710 but the manga starts with Luffy cutting himself as a kid then eating the Devil Fruit due to losing interest in their conversation and getting save by Shanks with Luffy doing a "my journey starts now" scene before cutting away to Luffy in a barrel. Both are good openings , it just comes down to preferences

4529726 Like I said, where the SHOW starts.
I know it's ahead of the manga, but I, personally, felt the show was better at establishing who Luffy and Zoro were by saving their respective backgrounds for the few episodes in. It established a general idea for what their quirks were and still gave us the background early enough that it didn't feel PURELY expositional.

4529732 I think that is a better approach. Establish who the characters are, then show the things that led them there. Who do you think would be a good fit for Sanji?

4529763 Thoughts on a live-action Outlaw Star

4529772 I haven't gotten around to Outlaw Star, so I can't offer any insight.

4529779 Check it out when you get the chance

4529779 Ever see Yuyu Hakusho? It's another decent series worth checking out, while Outlaw Star runs at around 26 episodes Yuyu Hakusho runs at around 116 episodes, so you're gonna need to set a bit more time away to watch that one.

4530947 I haven't even taken time for Space Dandy and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure yet.

4531005 So many good shows, so little time to try and enjoy them.

4531006 I've manage One Punch Man, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid and Monster Musume No Iru Nichijou.

4531026 I tried watching One Punch Man, but after I finished episode 11 I just stopped watching. With Monster Musume, I prefer the manga to the anime, both are pretty good but I prefer the manga on account it is a bit more expensive. Dragon Maid was enjoyable and had me wishing there were more episodes. I decided to go back and rewatch Yuyu Hakusho and Outlaw Star, partially for nostalgic reasons but also a means of comparing quality works from the 90s era and today, also their OPs are pretty fun.

4531039 One Punch Man only had twelve episodes. And the finale had the most epic fight ever! Also, Season 2 is confirmed.

Monster Musume I only know the anime, because I can't find anywhere here in Australia where the manga is available, and online, nowhere seems to be willing to send it here. No word YET on Season 2, but I'm pretty sure that's only because the creators are waiting for more of the manga to come out so they have more content to work with.

Dragon Maid... I THINK there'll be more to it, because I'm pretty sure it's In the same boat as Monster Musume, in that there weren't enough issues of the manga to make more by the time they'd finished it.

4531050 I might have stopped at episode 7, the series felt longer to me, not really sure why. And I'm pretty sure it had more than that last time I checked.

4531050 I found a site that lets you read manga online called eatmanga, you can find their Monster Musume page here. And I checked, all the chapter and page links should still be good.

4531098 Thank you for that. I DO prefer physical copies, but at this point I'll take what I can get for Monster Musume.

4531115 No problem, I'm pretty much the same way but where I am the same way but my general location means I have to deal with digital copies more than physical ones.

4531119 Again, I'm Australian. Aside from the standard common manga, such as Naruto Bleach and One Piece in book stores, it's next to impossible to get physical copies.
The only one I CAN get is One Punch Man, and even then they're special order through the same place I get my anime and Red vs Blue DVDs.

That said, every volume I order takes between three weeks and four months to arrive, because they have to be 'reviewed' before being sent to the store I order them at, which I honestly think is just an excuse for the higher-ups in the company to read it themselves.

4531138 I live in Montana, which chronically is a similar situation when it comes to getting manga and anime. When someone says a new game or such will be available in stores on a set date in the US best case for getting it in Montana is two months after the stated date.

4531145 Fair enough. The worst we have to deal with is a delay in release from anywhere between two days and a few weeks. But that's because we either hold games at a different standard for rating or have to wait for Australian access to overseas servers.
