086 Adventures in Flashficking!

If chapter lengths of Arcane Realms are any indication, writing short stories is not my forte. Some of you may share the sentiment - you have an idea, think you can wrap it in a nice 2-3k words, then something happens and you're suddenly publishing hundreds of thousands characters. Oh, the humanity, where have I erred?

To learn what it's like on the other end of the length spectrum, I have recently written something with a very strict word limit (150) for a contest organized in Flashfic, a group that aims at holding monthly competitions with, quote, no prizes and no pressure. It was a challenge to cover the prompt (Getting Warmer) in such a limit, but since I had great fun writing and reading other entries here's a signal boost - whether you're a veteran or a fledgling, feel free to check it out! Also, shoutout to SweetAI Belle on whose blog I first learned about the thing and of course Loganberry, the admit of the group.

Below the break the thingy I submitted this month - Warm, Warmer, Warmest starring slightly exasperated Fleur and her family!

Warm, Warmer, Warmest

Sacré bleu, now she’s done it!

Fleur didn’t mind winter, nor did she mind her daughter’s shenanigans in the snow, but she wasn’t exactly a fan of those barging in on her perfectly waxed floors. For the third time this week she got home to witness wet boots scattered around, jacket hung on the doorknob and earmuffs thrown into an umbrella stand. Was her husband so busy today he couldn’t spare a second to keep their filly from wreaking havoc?

But what’s that? Fancy’s own ensemble put down rather carelessly too? Oh, they weren’t getting away with it this time!

With a tirade prepped on her lips, Fleur followed the trail of clothing to the kitchen where the two culprits were—and where Chestnut was quick to offer her a steaming cup.

“Cocoa?”

Fleur sighed. For the third time this week, she had no choice but to forgive it all.

I hope it's not too terrible.

That's the future, folks! It is extremely unlikely for me to ever write a full sequel to Of Lilies and Chestnuts, but an anthology of short stories fueled by prompts? Yeah, I can do that. The one above is the first step. It actually started as a 198-word scene so I had to cut a good quarter of it - for example, the only thing that was put away properly and not thrown around the hallway was Chestnut's orange scarf she got from Rarity.

You can find this entry and many others in this thread.

Have a great weekend and I see you in May for some friendly competition!

aaaw. That's cute.

I approve of this little story and you definitely should give the anthology a shot.

I'm terribly sorry that I didn't reply to you four that month ago! I must have seen your comments, read it, gone to do something else with the intention of going back soon-ish... you know how it is. Anyway, I'm happy to hear you enjoyed this short story - with you on board and your support I think I'll be making more of these (and the next one is already out there).

Once again, sincerest apologies. :twilightsheepish:

I wouldn't be opposed to it. Lilies and Chestnuts are one of my favourite stories here on Fimfic. It's, I think, on a shared 1st place on "Adoption Fics", right up there with Spellbound Fireflies.

That's high praise, thank you. And I guess I should check out dem Fireflies as well!

You should. I've rarely been awestruck as I was when reading that.
