Character Talk: Finner · 11:25pm Mar 30th, 2017
When I create a character, I usually like them right off the bat. Sometimes I'll grow to love them over time (Lyric and Halo). Sometimes, looking back, I feel like I could have done better (Unison). And sometimes they surprise me by sticking around for more than one story (Dashing Hoof). But, with my upcoming story, there is one character who surprised me from the start. His name is Finner.
When I was writing this story, I knew that I liked Finner. I enjoyed writing his dialogue and crafting his personality, and his interactions with Lyric certainly made me smile. But, when I finished the main bulk of the story, I realized something. Finner had left an impression on me. He had somehow worked his way into my heart.
I can't say exactly what it is that I love about him. I know that I love his personality. And I love how he became a character who is more than he first appears. But even these don't encompass exactly why I've come to love him so.
After writing, I sent out the story to a few friends for their thoughts and edits as I always do, including my dear friend KellyTheDrawingUni. And those who have seen the story so far, including Kelly, have given it their approval and comments. But what really surprised me the most was how much I wanted to see Finner drawn, and Kelly's reaction when I asked if she'd be willing to do art of Finner during her next round of commissions. When she responded by saying that she'd love to, and that she'd actually been wanting to draw Finner, I was touched, because it showed me that she loved him, too.
And when Kelly did draw him, I was blown away. She managed to bring him to life just as I'd imagined him to be.
So, to everyone who has read the story so far and given their feedback, I thank you. And to those who will read the story once it has been released, I hope that you enjoy it as well. For now, though, here is a small teaser.
Everypony has someone who influences them, changes their lives. For Lyric, that someone was Finner, an old stallion who lived by the sea.
