4475219 Technically, reality is a fanfiction of itself. Day by day, the experiences, the people, the emotions, and really anything are seeped into the collective minds of people. Those people hope, wish, dream, and create. They essentially shape the world as they know it, unconsciously, in their minds.

In the end, reality is technically just a figment of our perceived imagination.

I think a lot of Greek mythology was fanfiction. A lot of sources have different stories for the same thing, so I bet some people were like,

PersephoneXHades is OTP because Zeus let it happen.

And so many agreed that it just won out, so it became canon.

Hmm.. Not sure.

Although, here's an interesting tidbit. The first fanzine was Spockanalia (1967), featuring Star Trek fanfiction of the classic series with Spock and Kirk. That's as early as I was able to trace the modern usage of the word fanfiction thus far.
