Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

Round numbers · 12:43pm Mar 27th, 2017

Whenever someone favs a story of mine, I'll go and check the little stats button to see how the viewership has been recently, and find out if maybe there's a new source for views.

I did this today for Button Goulash and discovered it's ranked 21,000 on the site.

Number one, that's a pretty darn good ranking. Number 2, it's nice and rooouuuuuund. :3 Hitting a multiple of 1,000 isn't something you do often, and it likely won't last, so I wanted to commemorate it. :V Just a little self-indulgence.

I'm happy for you!
(it also tempts me to check for the same on my stories)[

Tales of Fillydelphia is the 14,411th longest story on the site, and that amuses me just a little bit.

Congrats on the nice, round number. I'm going to take a look at a few of mine...

Oh. Oh my. The Drop of Ambrosia is currently ranked 1,337th on the site. I am immensely pleased by this, and slightly embarrassed by that pleasure.

Y'know, this got me (as I imagine it did most people) wondering where my stories sit in terms of rank. But before doing that, I got curious as to what really qualifies as a "good" rank, so I did some digging. Curiously, I can't find a spot anywhere on the site that tells us how many stories there actually are posted.

This annoys me.

One of the 3,000,000 fics on my "TO READ" (yes, all capital letters) list.....

Your blog entry reminds me again how the stats showed the total number of favourites for a fic until that one genius update in 2014 that took that away.....
I wish the total number of faves would show up there again..... I always need to screenshot my faves to keep track of them.

Click on "Browse All New Stories" on the start page, to get to the part of the site where you can browse through all the fics that are on the site. In the upper right corner, it says "Found 107,742 stories in 10ms".
That's it.

Oooooh. Thanks!

...

Somehow I thought there would be more.

I understand exactly how you feel.

The numbers are higher, but a lot get deleted or unpublished. I think only 3 of the first 10 stories, numerically, are published, and that stands as an average for the rest of the site. :B

4473801

I don't doubt that some got deleted or unpublished, but a lot is exaggerated. Even though I can't read as much as I would like, from the stories in my favourites are all still here.
Applying what you said as statistic, this would mean that only 30,000 of the first 100,000 fics here are published and that 70,000 (!) got deleted over time.
I don't know how you come to these numbers, but such a huge fic deletion is highly unlikely, with how active the community is here.
You also see that on the many unfinished fics here. Usually, authors just abandon their fics, but don't delete them.

It's the disparity between "number of stories published" and "current story number", which is in the 300k's somewhere. People start a fic and don't finish, they try uploading, change their mind, try uploading again... I don't know why people do what they do, they just do it. :B

I'm glad I'm not the only person that does this :twilightblush:

I can beat that:
Journeys is ranked 47,598th on Fimfiction. It is the 113,020th longest story and can be found in 87 bookshelves, being tracked by 35 users

Still working on it. I bet I can get one ranked lower than that if I pull my threatened Prince Flash Sentry and Princess Twilight Sparkle Live Happily Ever After fic, if I wrote it in free verse too. I'm just *baffled" on how 35 users actually tracked Journeys.

Although I'm going to have the darnest time beating the score you set with:
That's Right is ranked 103,407th on Fimfiction. It is the 143,974th longest story and can be found in 49 bookshelves, being tracked by 20 users.

No round numbers for me, but I'm pretty sure "But I Wanna Die!" (currently 1,021) was ranked 999th at one point.

Also, if I had the patience to click through Top Stories long enough, "Keeping My Word" and "To Be The King" would be on the same page (10,612 & 10,619). And "An Evening In" is exactly 1000 past the latter (11,619).

And now that I know "Predator" is ranked all the way down at 43,308th, I'm curious what the lowest-ranked story to get a "Recommended" or "Highly Recommended" from Present would be.

PP you know that this blogpost is gonna get the attention of Odd Todd, right? Whenever you get your desk nice and organized, who's gonna take that one pen without permission and never give it back, making your desk forever an ugly, uneven mess? Odd Todd. Whenever you order exactly a dozen donuts, who gun dun goofs and gives you an extra donut out of sheer negligence? Odd Todd. Who is the first to lose that one single Nerf dart after you lend out a blaster and gear for a Nerf war? Odd Todd. Who randomly grabs a mini cupcake outta the package without your permission, leaving eleven bloody cupcakes just sitting there, while also forgetting to close the lid? Odd Todd. Who drives one of those silly, three wheeled Bristish cars? Odd Todd.

PP, Odd Todd is gunna come over and wreck your shit because you have called him. Obviously, the answer is to go into hiding with your precious, even story, and hope that Todd doesn't randomly trip over you as he is wont to do. Also, could you buy me a single cupcake while you're there, please? Like, from the super expensive bakery kiosk at the mall. Double chocolate with chocolate frosting. I'll pay you back. One out of my box disappeared ,':/

The answer to your conundrum is that you've been hacking in your sleep. Again. Such is your innate hacking proficiency 8B

If you browse by Top All-Time, and go to the last page, the last story is 169,743rd!

So, yeah, 12th out of 170, isn't bad at all!

4475531

I did, but it only shows a little more than 100,000 still. Are you sure you looked right?

4475889
Last page last story. They don't go up by 1... so there's some odd counting going on. It may be more than 169k!

4475930

I only shows "Found 107,532 stories in 18ms" on the top right. That's all it does.

4476011
Click on the stats button for the story, and it wiil say 169,743rd.

4476036

Interesting. It even said 169,775 for me. So, basically, more than 60,000 fics got deleted since the site exists.....
That's almost half of the fics that got published here ever. Pretty sad quota.....
Makes me wondering what causes authors to delete their fics like this. Would be great to know the reasoning behind such fatal actions, to reduce this number in the future.

4476356
Yeah, that's a huge number of deleted stories! :pinkiegasp:

4476466

Have you ever deleted any of yours? If so, why did you decide for this?

4476531
One: Welcome to Pony Vale, a Welcome to Night Vale / MLP crossover. First day got 5 up-votes and 9 down-votes. With most people disliking it, I wasn't going to bother to finish it, and I hate seeing stories just lying there, labeled CANCELED, so I deleted it.

4476773

Hmm, that's only one reason, but it's a start. See, there was only very little reason to delete this fic, but there would have been A LOT of reasons to keep it around anyway:

1. (And that's the most important one already): There were people who liked it. Even if it was just one chapter. Some liked it and wanted to see how it goes on. That wouldn't have happened, but at least, they had the one chapter. Better than nothing.
But with deleting it, you basically let the majority who didn't like it decide for the minority who liked it what it can read. That isn't really fair, especially considering that the downvotes might have just happened because a bunch of bronies who don't like the franchise you crossed over with have seen it and felt entitled to butt in and give their disapproval to a crossover they don't want to see on the site.

2. You might have changed your mind one day. If you would have kept the fic around, more people would have seen it over time, maybe the upvotes would have become more over the months, giving you incentive to continue it one day.
But that chance is now gone, of course.

3. Even if you wouldn't have continued it, someone else might have. Authors taking over stories is not exactly a rare occurence here, so, eventually, someone else might have asked you to get the story transferred to his account and then written it for you.
The ones who enjoyed it, and others in the future, could have then seen how it continues on the other author's account.

4. Or, and that is the least that could have happened, it might have inspired someone who read the first chapter and was dissatisfied with it not getting continued to write his own crossover. Maybe even someone who never wrote a fic before and decided to give it a shot.
This would have been a WIN-WIN situation; there would have been a new crossover fic to replace yours and one fic more for the site in general. And, in the best case, even a new author who publishes fics regularly, because writing the crossover made him feel comfortable with writing and he wanted to write more after it.

Overall, I would recommend to never delete a story, unless your life literally depends on the deletion. Every fic, no matter how incomplete it may be, has potential and enriches the site and our fic writer community, in one way or another.
