So the reviews are in on Saban's Power Rangers... · 5:05pm Mar 24th, 2017

It is ever so much worse than I could have possibly imagined.

I mean, it's not even just Bayformers, it's Bayformers AND DC Universe mashed together into...gah...

But hey, at least I was right about Rita. So...yay?

Looks like I was right to stay away from it, it's just another failed remake that ultimately doesn't want to understand the original product and just thinks "Let's make edgy and grounded in reality so it appeals to the adults who were kids when they watched the original product".

Hope Saban changes their mind on trying to make sequels, let's not make this another Bayformers.

4470406 There actually was a fan made Power Rangers thing, from someone who hadn´t really seen much PR, showing a grittier, darker Power Rangers, kind of like that one Post Apocalyptic Power Rangers with robots and Skynet and whatnot

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Just the right amount of cheesiness and nostalgia without being cringy. Take it for what it is and it's a good popcorn flick.

EDIT: Also, did MovieBob watch a completely different movie? The actors playing the kids did a fantastic job.

You know what? Power Rangers is a stupid franchise. And that's why I love it. I've always felt it's at its best when it embraces the insanity, the ludicrousness. When they do something completely nonsensical and they're just like "Yeah, we just did that".

It's a franchise that has a space colony with giant space animals protecting it against bugs.

It's a franchise whose underwater military-like base created a gigantic super-train robot.

It's a franchise whose space police is headed by a big blue dog.

It's a franchise where a guy with silly CGI animal powers takes a stand for what he believes in, even though literally everyone else is telling him not to bother.

It's a franchise that juxtaposes a robot apocalypse with incredibly self-aware humor, also shadow puppets.

It's a franchise where two bumbling, comic relief characters lead the people in battle against alien invaders.

It's a franchise where a giant floating head in a tube solemnly instructs a Ranger to end his life for the good of all.

Would any of these have been any better if the series was more grounded? I don't think so. For a series that's as silly as it is exciting, grounding it would only serve to hold it back. At least, that's what I think.

Mind you, I'd probably still go see it if it had Bulk and Skull in it. Seriously, what the hell?

I've been a fan for 20 years and I thought it was great. Not perfect by any stretch but a very suitable entry to the franchise. I realize what others are going to dislike about it, the style perhaps and how it doesn't really resemble its predecessor but come on, that was 1995; times and tastes have changed but that doesn't mean they're worse. The team melded in a way that none of the other teams ever did and it felt genuine; they weren't just another set of goody goody caricatures. They were diverse and relatable, the latter being an important part of fiction anyway so I don't see the issue. Just my take on it.

4470442 I'd never heard of him before this. I am not impressed at his critical skills...

My brother-in-law and I were in the theater, waiting for Rogue One. That's when the trailer came up.

I can honestly say I had to laugh when it was revealed to be for the new Power Rangers movie. Nice to see it ended up as edgy as it looked back then.

And I trust online reviews like I do with Yelp Reviews.

Personal taste is not enough for a review.

You watch Moviebob's videos, too? Cool.

Anyway, even the more positive reviews of the movie seem to stop at "it's fine", as far as I know.

4470493 OK, guys? Here's the thing: I posted the clip I posted because this is the review clip Zef linked. I don't know who the fuck MovieBob is. The only Youtuber I actually watch/follow is Vannamelon. I don't do all this Youtube stuff everybody else does. Zef linked it, I trust Zef, I shared.

So don't get on MY case for resharing something that was shared with me, OK? Thanks. I appreciate it.

Also, see, I watched this video with no knowledge of who this MovieBob guy is, so I paid attention to what he was saying, which included things that are verified facts about the movie: that among the Ranger cast are a token autist and a token lesbian, that the Pink Ranger is part of a revenge porn plot that's barely touched, and that 25 minutes of a 2+ hour movie actually have any Power Rangering.

4470601 I don't even know who MovieBob is, I just linked the clip Zef shared.

4470671 Yup. Moth and I were going over the Rotten Tomatoes blurbs when I noticed that Moviebob's review had gone up, and he's one of my favorite film reviewers, so I watched it and shared it with Moth. Since I never watched Power Rangers, and, from the review, MB was too old to become a fan back then, I thought his opinion (which I respect, and has aligned almost perfectly with my own in other movies) would be valuable to the both of us.

(And, if nothing else, Bob's review of Pixels is a thing of beauty.)

But hey, everyone has critics they like, and critics they despise, and I respect that too. Everyone feels better served by critics whose tastes are similar to their own, and everyone has critics whose opinions they hate. For instance, I wouldn't touch AngryJoe with a ten-foot, finely-honed spear that had a poisonous, spider-covered, radioactive blade at the end. That spear is too good for him :)

I returned form the film ... I feel 20 years younger now.

4470671 I just think the best way to review a movie is too watch it yourself. I know you said you don't go to the theater, and I respect that, but I feel one bad review isn't enough to say it sucks. I am not asking you to give me a link to that, but most of the fans are happy, and I say that is more than Micheal Bay has done in recent years.

Eeeehhh..Of all possible reviewers, he had to go with MovieBob.. As the immortal meme had it, "Son, I'm a disappoint."

Here, this is better.

4470671 I feel like I should step in. I just came home from the movie, and I loved it. But let me explain why I liked it. And for the sake of context, I binged the first season of MMPR, so I have done my research.

I love well written characters. Well written characters make me very happy. The characters in this Power Rangers are really well written. None of them feel like token characters, because they aren't. The fact that people are saying that actually really annoys me. With Trini being gay, it's mentioned for like five seconds and dropped. No one talks about it again. And that's the way it should be. As part of the LGBT community, I found it refreshing. It wasn't harped on like I've seen done in the past. It's boom, "Oh, you're gay? That's cool. Moving on." And it kind of makes a bit of sense since Trini never had a male romantic interest in the original. As far as I'm aware.

Billy isn't a token character, either. So they made him black? Woopdiedoo. Didn't affect me one bit. You know how Zach was black in the original? That's a token black character. About as stereotypical as you can write a character. All of the original Rangers were tokens. As for his autism, it makes a lot of sense in the context of the original series. Original Billy was never able to read the room well, he was socially awkward and never really seemed all there to me. Granted, that was probably bad acting back then, but it plays well into the new movie, and it's not the center of attention.

Also granted, we might could have done without Pink's subplot, but it didn't take away from the movie. In fact, it added a little more depth to Kimberly's character, and it touched on the concept that sometimes, we do bad things and they have consequences. She makes a conscious decision to live with what she's done. It's not really harped on too much.

Even new Chinese Zach was well written. His sick mom is adorable and their situation isn't harped on like it could've been.

Jason does something stupid at the start of the movie, like any teenager would, and gets detention, which is where he meets the others. It's reasonable and it drives home that these are normal teenagers being thrown into something they don't completely understand.

The pacing of the movie was fantastic. If it had been all Rangers all the time, it would have been another bayformers. Instead, we had well written characters, really decent (not fantastic, but good) actors, Brian Cranston as Zordon (a role he excelled at) and a delightfully snarky Alpha 5. The build up for the Rangers is well paced and it makes you actually care about the characters, which really emphasizes the whole friendship theme. Which, if I remember correctly, is at the core of every Rangers series.

It's a bit darker, yes. Canon Power Rangers have gotten a bit darker in recent iterations, too. It's not that edgy, either. It's partly character-driven, the way any friendship story worth its salt should be.

Honestly, Moth, with your love of Power Rangers (and tokusatsu in general) I feel like you need to see this movie. I feel like you owe it to yourself. It's new, it's modernized, it's fresh, and it delivers as Power Rangers always has. I won't say it was better than most Rangers series, but it's definitely better than how things were handled in the original MMPR. Nothing is rushed and the tone of the movie is a bit-JUST a bit more serious in the movie.

Fuck that was long. Sorry, I honestly didn't think it would be. I promise I'm not trying to be a dick about this, but I feel like I should come to the defense of something I like and that people are misjudging based on a few online reviews. The movie isn't nearly as bad as most people are making it out to be. Give it a go when it comes to home release. I can at least promise you won't absolutely despise it.

Personally I liked it. I mean, it's not he greatest movie ever - I give it a high C+ to a B- grade - but it wasn't terrible. Sure it had faults but by no means did it suck.
