High powered air rifles · 11:01pm Mar 20th, 2017
Here's one. A .50 calibre rifle.
In The Mask Makes the Pony, I mention air guns there as well. There are some really, really powerful air guns, including sniper rifles.

In my mind, air guns are a good fit for Equestria, because there are so many potential ways to compress air. I did a lot of reading about various air guns, mostly due to Masks and the upcoming sequel, The Underwatch. I wanted to understand what I was dealing with, for realism. Then, in my long studies, I came across steam guns. The germans seemed to love them, and made gasification guns.
(See, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gasification)
Compressed gasses and steam made for some really, really powerful weapons, but there was a practicality issue.
Mobility.
So... Equestria has unicorns, and some of those unicorns are quite good at creating both water and steam. (In the Weedverse, at least)
Which means you don't need a huge water source, or a massive, ungainly heating element... you have everything you need in one neat organic package that just needs oats to function. (And maybe some snuggles at bedtime) Suddenly, a one thousand or two thousand PSI pressure system isn't difficult, it isn't difficult at all, and launching an .80 calibre hunk of brass at 1700fps (Thats 1159.091 miles per hour, or 1865.376 kilometres per hour, if you were wondering) is now a feasible option. With mobility.
Which means steam powered weapons and air powered weapons are a lot more practical in this 'verse than our own.
You're taking steampunk and running with it right up a scary mountain.

My math broke down at some point. An .80 calibre round travelling at 1700fps would impact with several thousand joules of energy. Conservative estimate? Maybe a half a dozen sticks of dynamite. On impact. Like I said, my math broke down, because I am absolutely shitty at it. The numbers get really big, really fast, and become super messy. Basically, anything organic, soft, and squishy is having a real bad day, and anything made of metal is too.
So I guess with that Preview Vinyl has taken into account Tarnished only has so many shots he can take with his Coach Gun before it becomes useless for anything other than bludgeoning and they likely do not have enough powder if they keep booby trapping the battleground for the Automatons to make him slugs for it for continued use so she is making him a Weapon that requires no powder and will easily be powered by his magic to fire devastating rounds at the machines.
So Vinyl becomes instrumental in weapons design for the Equestrian war machine?
Propane gas birdscarer gun, not a real potential weapon but dad says when he was young it launches frill neck lizards quite well (their neck frills make good sabot's) that land on the chests of female grape pickers in the vineyards. (have no idea how he would know that!)
Rainbow should have brought Tank, aww hang on wrong one.

Poor Rainbow, her legs are horribly broken beyond repair. Somebody get the leg fixing gun.
Love me some Demolition ranch.
I also remember reading an article, and watching a video on an air rifle Lewis and Clark took with them that was far better than the muskets of the time.
4465232 Does that rate Tank as a legchair (wheelchair with legs)?

I dunno, Rainbow has to be in pain with legs like that. It's best we get the leg fixing gun, just to be sure.
The manual breech loading on that .50 air rifle would cheese me off real quick and carting a tank around, possible scuba tank setup could be used I guess, would be a weight burden to the extreme if you need to rush on foot.
4465369 Maybe the morphine has kicked in already? You reeeaallly don't like the humanising thing do you, even if it's just to make the mechanics of the picture work? (not digging just chuckling) Could always have gone for a strapped on seat arrangement I suppose.
Strikes me as something a Pegasus might be good at too. Can get water from just about anywhere, and heating coils can just be powered by a lightning bolt or two. The Pegasus air guns are somewhat bulkier than Unicorn versions, but flight is pretty good mobility.
Also check out what's called a "light gas gun".

Imagine the rivet gun from Kabaneri.
