So, I was just thinking one day and I realized... there's a lot of different flavors of badass, aren't there? And since I'm the kinda guy who does stupid shit like this why not make a list of the different kinds of badass and my own personal opinions on what characters fill them best? And hey, why don't all of you suggest your own categories and/or examples or just agree and disagree with me?
Badass Idiot: We all know this guy, he might have the brawn but he barely has two brain cells to rub together. This guy's such an idiot you wonder how he remembers to feed himself. And yet because of that idiocy he's focused on the important things, the things that many of the smarter people forget and often berate themselves for having to have this knucklehead remind them.
My choice: Money D. Luffy
Badass Pacifist: This guy has the power, has the skill, but refuses to use it even at the cost of his own health. You know this guy could waste everyone in the room with barely a twitch of his finger, and yet the fact he not only doesn't but absolutely refuses to somehow makes him more badass than if he did.
My choice: Vash the Stampede
Badass Faker: This guy can barely lift dumbbell and is surrounded by people who can destroy planets by sneezing, and yet somehow manages to stand on equal footing through nothing more than acting skill, words, and the balls not to waver under the weight of his grandiose tales. He may be about to faint, screaming for mommy inside his head and his bladder about to explode if the wind blows the wrong way, but you'd never know by looking at him. He may be spewing bullshit from every orifice, but the fact that he actually manages to pull it off makes him badass.
My choice: Reigen Arataka
Badass Inspiration: Whether this guy can do anything on his own isn't what's important, but rather what he can inspire others to do. He mere presence can make the most feeble old man take up arms and fight with the passion and fury of a hundred well-trained soldiers in his prime. His words are like the very breath of God, and a single phrase can change worlds.
My choice: Kamina
Badass Strategist: Whatever else this guy can do, nothing compares to the grey matter inside his head. By the time you've started to implement your strategy he's already thought ten moves ahead, has calculated the odds of all twenty million ways this could turn out, and has a contingency plan for each an every one of them.
My choice(s): Sora and Shiro
Pure Badass: This guy doesn't just look and act badass, he is badass. No, scratch that, he is made of badass. Even if you can't describe how you know that this guy is badass through and through just by looking at him. He lives and breaths badass, and everything becomes badass simply because he is doing it. This guy could wear a frilly pink dress and play tea party with a four year old girl and it would somehow still be badass.
My choice: Kenshiro
The ordinary badass : a character without any edge, special characteristics or general charisma. This character looks and acts like nothing and is treated as such. However, when a problem arises, he acts and saves the day without difficulties.
Ex: Saitama "one-punch-man"
I like all your choices but to me for Badass Insperation All-Might would have been a better pick in my opinion.
Well I do have a few Badasses of my own I can name. There may be spoilers, for some of these characters.
Badass Idiot: While Monkey D. Luffy would have been my own first choice, I think that Goku from the Dragon Ball franchise more than earns this title as well. Goku in general, has a heart of gold, it's his good nature that has allowed him to surpass and overcome, far crueller and stronger fighters, throughout the Dragon Ball series. He's lacking in the intelligence department, which has gotten him into trouble at times, but it's also allowed him to keep growing and also to be a motivating force for Vegeta to keep pushing his own boundaries. He's at heart, a guy who loves his family and friends, fighting and eating.

Badass Strategist: For a strategist, I had two choices. Light Yagami from Death Note and Lelouch Lamperouge/Vi Britania. Lelouch wins in my own eyes, since he's shown exceptional skill commanding battles. Whereas Light was more in a battle to conceal his identity and keep it hidden from the authorities that could stop him. Lelouch is an amazing strategist, he inserts himself into a rebellion to take revenge on his own family, he repeatedly defeated superior forces, with much smaller armies. Using the environment to his advantage on several occasions, effectively using his Geas power, bluffing and every other asset he has at his disposal.

Badass Kid: A new category I felt was missing. There are plenty of badass kids in anime, kids who do insane stuff or become badasses overtime. Like Gon and Kilua from Hunter x Hunter. Or Chihiro Ogino in Spirited Away. For me however this new category would be awarded to one girl, Tanya Degurechaff from the Saga of Tanya the Evil/Youjo Senki. The nine year old girl, fighting in her world's version of the First World War. She's a lieutenant of her country's special mage-class soldiers. Troops that can use enchanted gear and weapons. I don't want to spoil the series or go into too much depth with Tanya, I simply suggest you watch this show.

Smooth/Cool Badass: This is another additional little category, saved for characters that can pull off being cool and badass. This doesn't necessarily mean they have to be sword swinging heroes or cyborgs. They simply have to personify, for you what a cool character is, someone smooth and slick. For me, that's Spike Spiegel from one of my favourite anime's, Cowboy Bebop. Spike has the ever-awesome Steve Blum to thank for his amazing voice
. Spike is an incredible martial artist, gun fighter/marksman, detective and melee fighter. He's got a shady past as a gangster, having managed to escape the criminal life, despite everyone else who tried, ending up dead.

Pure Badass: This choice was hard, there are so many, many badasses that could take this spot. But since I'm drawing purely from anime. This spot can only go to one man. Guts from Berserk. He's been using oversized swords to fight, since he was a kid, he's so used to this fighting style, that as an adult, he can wield a blade, the smith who forged it, thought it was impossible to wield. Due to the absurd size and weight of the blade. Guts fought a hundred men by himself, when he was using his smaller, oversized greatsword which was three times as large as a normal one. After the eclipse which brought the demonic god hand to the world, Guts has been pursued relentlessly, for two years he fought and killed demons, he's killed so many his blade is now a cursed weapon that can kill the god hand themselves. Guts lost his arm during the eclipse, and had it replaced with a prosthetic hand, that also holds a cannon. He wears armour that literally injures him, to make sure he can keep fighting, if he becomes too injured to fight normally. Essentially holding him together and letting him continue a fight.

except he DOES have some surprisingly smart moments at rare occasions, and can do some sweet things from time to time
managed to befriend the evil demon sealed in his sword.
granted the demon was one of the less evil ones, and was mistreated by all the other demons...but still... he even befriended him so hard he resurrected him when he died, although he denied that it was for a good reason

Silent Badass: He doesn't speak, nor groans, his actions show what we need to know, he's there to kick the ass of stuff and then ask questions.
Example: Doom Slayer (Is there someone else to fit this category?)

Unstoppable badass: someone who doesn't even really have to be strong, but no matter what anyone does or how they do it, this person will still find a way to get what they want and survive anything.

I do feel the badass idiot should also say just dont really pay attention luffy has shown to be pretty smart at times like when he fought the sand guy cant remamber his name. He could only be hit by a weapons that are wet or when he was wet himself. Luffy used his own blood to defeat him
