LImited info on Power Rangers 2017 raises huge red flag... (Speculative ranting ensues) · 10:47pm Mar 15th, 2017

...or should I say, green flag.

(No, this isn't what you think it is. Read below the cut.)

OK, so I was looking at RangerWiki and IMDb, and some things stood out to me and painted a pretty intriguing picture. According to available information on the new movie:

- Zordon was formerly the Red Ranger.
- Rita Repulsa's costume is overwhelmingly green, and her staff appears to have the Green Power Coin embedded in it.
- IMDb lists a female stunt actor as "Green Ranger (Prologue)".

All of the above adds up to:

Rita Repulsa was the Green Ranger when Zordon was a Power Ranger.

I'll be very interested to see if that's where the movie's writers actually went with this. While I largely disapprove of the excessively Bayformers approach to the movie (certain trailers I've seen showcased things that reminded me uncomfortably of the Witwickys in Bayformers 1), a solid enough script with interesting things like that could go a long way toward saving the movie, even moreso than Bryan Cranston as Zordon.

That actually sounds like a pretty cool idea. It would explain why Rita had the Green Ranger power token in Mighty Morphing Power Rangers.

I remember hearing a while back, that it had been confirmed she was formerly the Green Ranger. So I think your theory is confirmed, unless I'm not remembering things correctly. :twilightblush:

Huh, so prior to becoming Giant Space Wizard Head in Tank, he was a Ranger alongside Rita? That is interesting. Wonder if Zed was also on their team

More than that, some press releases have said Rita came to Earth on orders from Lord Zedd to find the Zeo Crystal for him.

I think the question now is, if they go for a sequel, will they give Rita a redemption arc, or bring in Tommy to succeed her?

I think it's a fantastic idea. I've been a Rangers fan for about 20 years and this movie looks like it's doing a lot of things very well.

I still haven't seen Mighty Morphin Power Rangers for myself, so my reaction to this is: Huh.

What if it isn't just Rita and Zordon, but all of the old Rangers had some sort of fallout. It might explain Ritas line "I have killed Rangers before".

You know, if Zedd does appear in this movie or possible sequels, I hope the basically do nothing to his basic design. Zedd is already badass. I read somewhere that during the early parts of season 2 they were getting complaints that he was actually scaring kids (which, since he was the main villain at the time, seems kind of the point), which is why they toned him down later.

But yeah, make a movie quality costume/cgi, but don't mess with the Zedd's design.

.... You're really tempting me to see this movie you know that?

Interesting, perhaps there is reason to be excited about the movie after all. I'm just really worried that they're trying too heavily to establish it as a new identity, especially with them already hinting they're going to green light sequels and start a movie verse for it. Regardless of how much confidence you have in your product, you don't try to make a sequel before you've given audiences a chance to see the first piece and decide if it's worthy of being continued.

This would actually make an odd amount of sense. I kinda stopped watching pre-Turbo and never really learned the lore, so hopefully the new movie takes itself seriously enough to be fun.

4457671 I'm guessing they'll destroy Rita, or at least foil her plan. In the later case, she'll fall back and form a team of her own to combat the Rangers. Guess who will be recruited onto it?

4457962 Yeah, that's been too big of a problem lately in the movie industry. Like, the entire DCCU...

4458064 Turbo and Space were the last "lore" seasons except for later shows that pulled Tommy back in and did some backed-up continuity...integration...stuff. Really, anything past Zeo is too big of a convoluted mess to bother caring about as far as the classic MMPR lore goes.

4458160 Lost Galaxy was sort of a lore season, it had a few left over plot points from In Space. Lightspeed Rescue was the first one to truly be independent of all prior seasons.

As someone who's only seen some of the newer era shows and only seen Dino Thunder from start to finish, I'm going into that movie with no expectations, never having seen the OG Power Rangers show. And I'm OK with that. Even if it ends up like the Last Airbender movie where the only way of enjoying it is as a standalone thing, then so be it, I don't know if something would be accurate to the original show or not. Worst case scenario, at least I get to see a giant robot.

Phsh, Not even Bayformers. From what I've seen, the Zords will just meld together to turn into the Megazord, as if they're made out of semi-liquid metal.

4459098 When I call something "Bayformers-esque", I'm not referring solely to the visual effects and robot designs (although that's certainly there). It's the entire aesthetic, story tone, and production style. For example, in the trailer, one of the Rangers' parents angrily demands she pee in a cup when she tells her little siblings about finding the alien spaceship. THAT is Bayformers.
