Windows tends to like starting up little tiny background processes that stack up very slowly over time, so leaving the OS running for a very long period of time can tend to cause chugging on less powerful machines.

For laptops, running constant heat, even when off, is bad for the components. Laptops are notoriously bad at getting rid of heat, and it tends to shorten their lifespan considerably.

I am not steeped in Linux operation enough to be able to offer reliable tech advice on how they operate, but aside from aging your components more rapidly, I'm certain that Linux doesn't have as much overhead as Windows. It's more likely just your laptop's age that's catching up with it.
