Some Big News Coming - Plus Excerpt · 4:22am Feb 26th, 2017
In a couple weeks I'm going to have some really big news that should be fairly exciting.
For now, here's a little something to whet your appetites:
The water in the bay had a decidedly green cast as the train rode by. It was not all that unusual for Hong Kong, really, not unless one counted how buildings stuck out at regular intervals in the lowlands, Some few had collapsed, but the flooding had been recent and gradual enough that most of them still stood, even if they were all empty of people. Only birds lived in many of those skyscrapers now, and occasionally fish. Only the highlands had been spared, and there life teemed, perhaps to excess. Barges marked with aid from a hundred countries were corralled at the newly-built temporary docks higher up. It was a miracle we'd managed to get train tickets at all, but, then, we are very good at miracles.
"It's hard to believe that forty-five million people have been displaced from just one city alone," Leit Motif said sadly, playing with a marked length of wood in her hands, a sturdy wand. "Why haven't the waters subsided yet? This isn't global. Not yet, anyway."
"I don't know. That's what we're here to find out. It's big, I can tell you that much." I glanced over at the woman across from us, who had her face pressed against the window to watch the clouds as the rising sun painted them in red and gold. "I still can't believe you insisted on keeping your hair."
Rainbow Dash glanced over and rolled her eyes, still as vivid a pink as they'd been a few days ago. Her hair cascaded down her shoulders and back in an unbrushed mass of tangled colors. Even the best-dyed media stars in Hong Kong would struggle to match that level of natural beauty. "I've had to sacrifice my good looks and my tail for this stupid mission, and my wings are cramping up under this stupid magic jacket. If you think I'm giving up the absolute perfection that is my hair, you'd better hang up your hat as an oracle, Daphne."
"I think you look nice," Twig blushed, kneading her fingers together. Of the lot of them, she was the only one who looked remotely Asian, having chosen her form to blend in rather than self-express. Of course, her hair was still unusually kinky for a Cantonese girl, but it suited her cute features. "Beautiful, even."
Blushing, just a smidge, Rainbow took her hand and squeezed it. "Thanks, Twig. I guess I still don't get why I'm here." She reached back with her other hand and scratched under her jacket, the limb vanishing into interdimensional space for a moment
"It's a hunch, Rainbow. I wouldn't call it a vision, but, somehow, I know you being here - and being able to fly still - is important." I settled back. In another part of my awareness, peering through a star a world away at a place kissed by sunset, I watched from above as Marcus slammed into the ground in Manehattan's Central Park, bruising his wing joints and legs with his recklessness, and snorted fondly. "Pegasi."
Rainbow and Marcus met my eyes simultaneously. "What? Don't look at me that way," they said in unison, entirely unaware of the coincidence.
Throwing my head back, I laughed, startling the others with my break from somberness. "Oh, this is going to be fun."
*gently vibrates in excitement*
