Transformers: Shards of Lithone 1.4 Galvanized · 2:54am Feb 19th, 2017
Behold! A clash of titans unlike any you've ever seen! A monument of lightning-paced action and terrific stunts! A flash of characters putting their lives on the line for the sake of what they hold dear!
Come, true believers, to witness the twists, turns, and triumphs of Transformers: Shards of Lithone!
Galvatron? GALVATRON! Even I've heard of ol Galvie, he was in the most recent live action movie.
So like if Megatron was Luna, but still evil, Galvatron is Nightmare Moon, right? So is "Galvatron" being "Galvatron" because he's nutty as a fruitcake, or because if he revealed himself it would upend the truce?
I've been meaning to ask, is there some sort of hard and fast rule that a transformer can only have 1 alternate form? It sure seems like this is why Grimlock can't turn into a vehicle, but it doesn't seem like it should be too much of a challenge to cybertronian technology to transform into multiple forms.
Also, Dynobots are basically like Batman, right? The difference between Batman and Superman is that Superman is really Clark Kent, while Bruce Wayne is really Batman. Similarly, modern Autobot/Decepticons have an alternate form, but their bipedal form is their "true" form. Wheras most animalistic cybertronians can transform into a bipedal human form as well, but their animal form is their "true"form.
Correct on all accounts, though I always love to put my own spin on things!
Well, why not both?
Or neither?
The reason in-fiction is the same as the IRL reason most toys only have two modes: It's an engineering nightmare. This is slightly mitigated in fiction by the whole "Scan a new alt-mode" thing, but it's still a lot of moving parts to keep track of in one entity.
There are triple-changers, but they are unique in that they are extremely powerful and adaptable due to their superior engineering. Most triple changers will have one air vehicle mode and one combat vehicle mode in addition to the requisite robot mode.
Actually, we've already had a triple changer appear in this comic: Alpha Trion transforms into both a space-cruiser and a lion. I have quite a few triple-changer toys because of how awesome they are, so expect to see a few of their ilk.
Once again, that depends on the series. The Original Dinobots were created through the logic of "Robots are cool, dinosaurs are cool, robot dinosaurs are amazing" without much thought beyond that.
I feel like RID Grimlock follows your line of thinking, since he clearly feels more comfortable in his reptilian skin.
The darker fiction tends to use the dino modes as a berserker state; their main modes are the robot modes, but if they really need to bring some uncontrollable pain, they'll shift into murder lizards. Problem is, their level of intelligence drops considerably as energon-lust takes control, similar to, like I said, the berserkers. It's a bit of a last-resort. See: the Fall of Cybertron Video Game.

I love the idea that by day Mild-mannered Megatron is a humble decepticon warlord leading a conquest of the galaxy, but by night he transforms into his alter-ego Galvatron! Scourge of the autobots.........also.
That's what keeps us all guessing!
That explains why they were portrayed as similar to the Berserker orders the Vikings had in the Deadlands story you shared with us. And why Dinobots train so hard: their training needs to be instinctual, since they won't be able to think about it.
Rogue Decepticons? Sure, that's what they want you to think.
