I've heard similar and even from the trailers, that's kinda what I was expecting.

If you ever find the time, I'd recommend giving it a shot. It really breaks down the characters and explores them in ways that are fairly unique.
Of course, it's been years since I've read this so I may be remembering it with rose-tinted glasses.
