(Thought a Mimic encounter would make a good test run for uploading video clips to YT.)

4365340 King Mimics are even worse. I'll try to vidcap a King Mimic later. Running into a regular Mimic is an "Ah, CRAP" moment. Running into a King Mimic is an "OH, FUCK" moment.

Dark Souls 2 and 3 did mimics right in that you can tell if the chest is a mimic and they actually drop something you might find in a chest like a weapon or a useful item. (Not sure about Dark Souls 1 since I've not played it.)

4365350 In the Dark Cloud games, Mimics are very much Surprise Buttsex. Worse in that in DC2 you have no way of knowing if you're about to hit a King Mimic. In DC1, you could at least prepare yourself for the possibility that a chest was a King Mimic because DC1 had Big Chests in dungeons--a Big Chest either had a weapon in it, or was a King Mimic.
