A New Dawn for Sonata Dusk · 8:41pm Jan 1st, 2017

If you're a reader of my story Lateral Movement, you might have noticed a comment I made a little while back wherein I confessed that I wasn't utilizing Sonata very much, in terms of her making use of her powers and abilities to their fullest extent. Moreover, I let it slip that the reason for that was because I wasn't sure of what her game stats should be.

That might sound rather odd, but I rely on the game stats for various characters in the story to help keep their abilities strictly-defined, so that I know what they can and cannot do within the context of the story. Having a firm set of rules that they operate under keeps them grounded. Without that, I tend to find it difficult to determine where their limits are.

While David Silver did give Sonata stats in A Dangerous Sparkle, I've been forthright on not liking them very much. To be clear, that has less to do with what David wrote (though some of it is, such as not giving her charm person...or at least an equivalent for fey creatures) and more to do with what I think are the inherent limitations of a class-level system of generating characters.

The good news is that I've finally gotten around to writing up stats for her using Eclipse: The Codex Persona, a free d20 supplement for generating characters via point-buy, allowing for a much wider range of possibilities. While the flavor text for this build places it somewhat in the future from where Lateral Movement is now, for the most part this is the build that I'll be relying on to measure exactly what spells Sonata has, what skills she can use, etc.

You can find her write-up over here. Enjoy!

Ummm, when were they married? Is that later?

Cause if so... SPOILER!

4365244 I said in the post that "the flavor text for this build places it somewhat in the future from where Lateral Movement is now."

That said, there's a caveat here that the story might not adhere to what's in these blog posts, simply due to the course of events that happen as I actually write Lateral Movement. I mentioned that in my previous blog post with regards to Lex's stats, so I thought it was understood here as well.

Just to be clear: the story might not hold itself true to what I've written on my other blog. A lot of the twists and turns that things have taken have surprised even me, so far.

Yeah, sorry about that. I skimmed, commented, then read it. Wrong order I guess.

Stories have a way of surprising everyone too, so no surprise there.
