    Coming Soon, Really

I've been a bit under the weather since Trotcon, but feeling better now.

This weekend I need to work on putting together some poni stuff for my niece (she's up here for her birthday), and my inability to do basic things makes that a bit difficult. So I may be delayed a few days on the Trotcon retro and the other long post I still really really want to share with y'all.

Twilight's Enigmatic Clarification (AI ≠ LLM GAI)

To head off any possible confusion, I've added a clarification to TEEE's story page and a note at the top of the chapter explaining that TEEE was not written using LLM generative AI (the story actually predates this technology by several years).

I will be at Trotcon. Still alive.

I remain alive, and as of June 13th am now the number of symmetries in a cube.

    I will be at Trotcon.

Please contact me if you're there! (Or even if not, that's okay too.) :pinkiesad2:

I might do an author party. I'll announce it with another post. Signal boost would be useful.

Sorry for disappearing. Ironically the thing I wanna talk about is the thing that keeps me from being here at FF or getting anything done. :facehoof:

Happy Hearth's Warming Eve! · 8:00am Dec 25th, 2016

Happy pony holiday because EVERYTHING MUST BE PONI :flutterrage:

Dammit, Hasbro. Your ships are all wrong!
(Well, except RainbowPie. Pink goes with everything.)

Have a small Hearth's Warming gift! :pinkiehappy:

I discovered this delightful vignette blog thanks to kudzuhaiku and a lot of internet searching. Undertalers made the most famous vignette from the blog (glass of spiders) into a meme, and nopony bothered to source it. :facehoof:

EDIT: Apparently, the author has taken almost all of them down! :fluttershyouch: But the author does sell little books with them, in chapbook form (whatever that is).

And now, for something completely different...

ECT is supposed to buck with your memories (and also the anesthesia burns like hell, and putting you under always has risks). That's the main reason they don't do it until you've tried most conventional depression therapies. Any lost memories are usually of stuff that happened during the ECT, or immediately before it. So usually you only lose recent memories.

I had been acting under the assumption that I hadn't lost any memories, but this was foolish: you don't remember memories you lose! :derpytongue2: I guess I was expecting that if I lost any memories, I would notice missing gaps in a sequence of events. But that isn't how it works.

I lost at least one long memory. I only discovered this recently because of the parody carols I recorded. I couldn't remember any details about the fourth EQG movie. For a while, I thought it was so bad that it just wasn't memorable. (Granted, that still might be true.) :trollestia:

Not pictured: waifu stealer number two.

I lost the entire movie. :pinkiegasp:

At some point I realized I was an idiot for thinking I'd seen it when I hadn't watched it yet. I did remember putting it off for a long time. But when I asked Jewel to watch it with me, he told me that we had already watched it together! He agreed to watch it with me a second time. During the first five minutes of the movie, I kept asking him if he were certain that I'd seen it with him. Like, ten times at least. He thought it was hilarious.

The experience of watching it a second time was absolutely bizarre, because I had no episodic memory whatsoever. I couldn't remember the plot, the new characters, the special powers, how the camping arrangements and tents were structured, or any sequence of events. But two kinds of memories did persist, which is why I finally acknowledged that I must have seen it already.

The first kind of memory I retained were very specific portions of images, when those images were very unusual. I remembered Pinkie Pie screaming as she disintegrated during the first dream sequence. I remembered Pinkie Pie's pillow of marshmallows. I remembered the burned nail holes Pinkie Pie made. (Golly, can you guess my favorite pony?):heart: I also remembered the shape of the pendant once all seven stones were together.

The second kind of memory was emotional memory. I didn't know the plot, but I had a sense that there wasn't a traditional bad-guy villain. I knew when unexpected things were going to happen, or when things were safe or dangerous.

Anyway, it was one of the strangest experiences I've ever had. Not nearly as strange as ketamine, but still pretty weird.

One last thing: I think I know why my kidneys are damaged! I don't think the antibiotic I was on long term did much to them, but it did mask the kidney damage because the doctors thought it was artificially inflating my creatinine levels (this was many years ago), so they didn't think I had weak kidneys at that point—when I think I already did.

I remember something that happened to me maybe fifteen years ago, and I'm pretty sure it's the reason. Protip: if a doctor tells you to take twelve Advil a day for about four months, you might want to question that suggestion. NSAID's (most over-the-counter pain relievers, except Tylenol, (a.k.a. paracetamol, APAP, or for Celestia knows why acetaminophen in the US)) damage your kidneys if you OD on them, and I did it every day for more than 100 days. (Tylenol is also dangerous, and far deadlier because it hits your liver, not your kidneys.)

Anyway, be nice to your organs, and have a pleasant holiday.

Happy Hearth's Warming!

Anyway, be nice to your organs

Ain't that the goddamn truth. In the past two months I've lost two family members and one good friend to long-term medication-ing.

you don't remember memories you lose!

No, no you don't... I had a mouth surgery almost a year ago, and I do not remember that day except for four, 2-second snippets.

It's funny, anesthesia doesn't do that to me at all. Either way, this is markedly different from anesthesia. It's literally having the circuitry in your brain randomly erased.

The mechanism is probably related to the electrical discharge breaching the hippocampus and other midbrain structures. There must be a tie-in to the hippocampus for recent memories that have already been moved into long-term storage. Maybe the process of short-to-long transfer takes longer to "complete" than I expected. That would make some sense from an evolutionary perspective, because medium-term memories could help with short-term recognition, but it's also possible that the mechanism is complex and can't operate that quickly—meaning it needs a bunch of REM cycles to finish packing a memory into long-term storage.

Yes, it is very different... but still, it is annoying to not remember stuff. Though I guess I am lucky to at least know I am missing something.
