Something From Nothing on a break

In unfortunate news, Something From Nothing has to go on a break. My co-author, Vold, had her laptop go bust on her. She's planning on getting a cheap new one and opened a gofundme to help fund a replacement. If any of you readers want to donate, please don't feel like you have to but it would be very much appreciated.

A genuine need for reader feedback

I'm sure you've noticed that after several months, Stargate Shangri-La has finally updated. Now most of that is my fault, I hit a wall with my muse and Thunderclap and I decided to focus on other stories. One thing that did stand out to me during that time is one of the stories biggest flaws; how we wrote the Hallan-Earth negotiations. That, barring the thing with Floyd, has been the biggest sort

    Floyd lives!!

For those of you invested in our favorite film student-turned-body-snatcher, he'll be making a come back soon. I got a new laptop back in January, and after some time to settle in, I've been busying myself with Floyd's next chapter. I can't promise it'll be out soon, but, I'm aiming for next week. Can't wait to get back into things.

    The Future of Jason's story

Alright so, the lot of you who have stuck with Edda through all the filler, I honestly don't blame you if you haven't, are probably really confused by that last chapter. Well, the thing is, that is the last chapter. It's an epilogue and a hint at where the next story is going. As the title implies, theres going to be a time jump. Why? Because, I want to get as far away from Edda as I can. Edda

Shangri-la wants you! · 10:51pm Nov 13th, 2016

Alright guys, we're putting out a casting call. Your laz-I mean generous authors and giving you a chance to have your OCs added to the story, as either members of the Expedition, or as off-worlders. If you're interested, reply to this blog post. Red and Black alicorns need not apply.

Honestly, I'd rather have General O'Neill appear in a cameo instead.

4301126 Oh don't you worry about that :raritywink:

I'm interested of having my OC in your story

4301130 Well, I need thier bio

I have a few to choose from.

4301131 ok here he is

Name:Arctic Ace

Race:Pegasus

Looks:Purple mane and Tail and he color is White and He has Ice Wings with a snowflake cutie mark and wears a purple scarf around his neck

Personality:Sweet and kind and is a nice Stallion you will ever met and he is always happy to help others

I might be interested if you respond to my PM with the baby Dazzlings and baby Sunset...

Just to confirm, before I make a fool of myself by submitting the wrong one: Ponies or humans?

Not exactly an OC, but a suggestion for species to use in the Pegasus Galaxy; some of the non MLP races from the Ponyfinder game. If you're not familiar, it's a unofficial D&D supplement for playing pony races (with the serial numbers filed off to avoid lawsuits...). Wasn't sure if you were sticking to ponies and SG races (you don't have special effect budgets to worry about).

Example: Purrsian. A winged feline race (comparable in size to ponies). Unable to cloudwalk like a Pegasus, their paws have as much manual dexterity as a human hand. Traders dedicated to enjoying more hedonistic pursuits, with a gypsy-like mentality towards ownership (especially others). Primarily desert dwellers.

I've got a guy in mind...

4301199 This story doesn't take place in Pegasus.

Would a Air Force Security Fores OC be good? Might want to represent my old career field.

Iron Rock Ambassador

Race: Earth Pony Mage (Rock power user basically has the power set of a earth bender)
Comes from an alien world populated by earth ponies that was subjected by the ancients to genetic engineering. The result was that eventual evolution of active earth magic. Active earth magic falls it to 4 spheres you have rock, plant, lava, and healing types. Due to not having access to most magic IE unicorns and Pegasus, His planet developed along steam punk tech lines. The planet by the time your story roles around is in a advance atomic information age (Think 2050). His planet also has one alicorn. This alicorn is younger then sisters and embodies the spirt of Ingenuity. This alicorn leads a science theocracy with him as the head scientist (King). He is also weaker then your average alicorn due to being the planets only unicorn and not grasping his full magic abilities.
Iron Rocks Color: Dark grey coat with Rust red hair

Iron Rocks Personality: Think of a stereotype dwarf loud, boisterous, and sturdy.
If you like this planet idea let me know I have some more ideas that I could add to it.

Hmm, tempting. I do have an old OC that's just gathering dust since the last time this kind of offer came up.

4301185 Sure, I suppose I'll throw one of mine in since I happen to have a scientist pony on hand.

Alchemilla, a brick red unicorn with a silver mane. Her cutie mark is a bubbling flask which represents her special talent for experimentation; she intuitively figures out how things work and new applications for them. She's a practical scientist, who prefers to see ideas applied and tested as soon as possible instead of wallowing about in theoretical discussions. While she is specialized in the natural sciences (chemistry, botany, and biology), she's spent enough time around colleagues to gain a working knowledge of various other fields. She can seem cold and unapproachable, but will open up quickly and warmly to those she perceives as being on equal academic standing. She can be impatient and a bit rash, and is very much a hooves-on scientist.

Or just give her normal skin and her character could work as a human too, if not enough are submitted.

I have one in mind for you, was an Ali but I can send you the bio as a unicorn instead might fit this story well since her special talent is portals which are quite similar to stargates. just let me know. (preview of her is my avatar thumbnail)
<---------

4301215 Not that I don't like the idea, but the Shangrians did not experiment on any lifeforms.

Off-Worlder pony, Avatar Sprite:

i.imgur.com/mBhH9SI.png

Earth Pony but special talent is technology.

In case any planned offworld worlds have higher tech level then the ponies of Equestria

4301209 Sorry, got the Galaxy names mixed up...

4301237 I didn't realize that well the ideas there if you want to make anything out of it,

4301262 Hope that's enough bio information for my OC and hope it's good enough to use in your storie

I wanted to ask if changelings would be okay? the pre-thorax ones anyhow?

4301313 Any race is good

4301317
Commision image.

Truth: Changeling (Drone or other is up to you, he was a PF character of mine)

Roles: Infiltrator, interrogator.

Truth tends to be very wallflowery if he can, until he finds some angle for leverage and then goes to bend another into his service for what he's there for. He prefers the base form above, but otherwise isn't above taking what's needed for his next role.

(Anyway you want to use him, go for it.)

Still Current: Sea Pony (If you wanted to have them, very big earth pony if not.)

Still Current is a fun bubbly mess of happy. Very hooves on, she goes to basically do whats needed, while being all very optimistic about her place in the world. Upset or unhappy, she's perfectly willing to grab said one, carry them about, and drag the grump out of them.

Different still current ref: SC

Well, if you're offering....

Otto Correct, an aging unicorn historian specialising in pre-Equestrian lore! Often mishears things, and wonders aloud why every keeps spouting nonsense. Very clumsy, but very eager to help.

Iron-grey coat, salt'n'pepper mane, dark eyes. Cutie mark is a vial of ink spilling over a stack of parchments.

4301347
Roger that.
Name: Lt. j.g. Astral Venture
Gender: Male
Pony Race: Bat Pony/Thestral/Whatever you want to call them
Appearance: Steel grey/Dove Grey coat. Rust red mane and tail, both short. Hazel eyes.
Cutie Mark and Talent: A brass sextant on a circular star-field. Astronavigation/Exploration.

Background: Venture was born into a village of isolationist [sic Bat Ponies]. He would often wonder about the world outside the village. One day, he wandered off into the surrounding mountains and got lost. It was there where he found a discarded sextant that was likely dropped by the Equestrian Royal Guard that occasionally passes through the mountain range. With some experimentation, he managed to teach himself how to use it and return to his home; only now with a cutie mark. Since the return of Princess Luna and the gradual reintegration of [sic Bat Ponies] into Equestrian society, Venture enlisted the Equestrian Navy to explore the [INSERT PLANET NAME HERE*]. His current assignment is RES Horizon, but the Horizon is currently in dry dock awaiting a refit. As such, he was on shore leave and went to the Frozen North for the night sky and the previously lost Crystal Empire.

Too much backstory? I'd hate to accidentally step on your toes. I wanted to give enough backstory for you to work with and to explain his presence in the story.

Yes, I made a walking Star Trek reference.

Crap, I forgot to adapt the personality.... Quick question, have you watched Star Trek: Beyond?

*For the life of me, I can't remember what you called the planet.

I have a Culture you can use for an off planet mission if you'd like. It's not the most fleshed out Culture, and I need to change a few things to fit an off world race. But seeing as I never write, might as well pass it on. I can PM it to you along with some OCs.

4301406 We call it Halla and no I haven't, I only saw the first one .

I've got a few OCs that you can use, if you need anymore info then the basics I give here, feel free to ask
Ebon Dash: black pegasus pony with wild red mane and tail, mark is a white cloud with three red bolts of lightning coming from the bottom, bright yellow eyes. is a skilled weatherpony and notorious prankster, loves to have a laugh at his friend's expense

Silverblade: very skinny silver unicorn with orange mane and tail, short cropped mane, knee-length tail. mark is a scimitar over a purple starburst, bright orange eyes, orange aura. is a royal guard at canterlot, skilled battlemage, specializing in conjuring weapons of pure mana and augmenting them with spells. very literal thinker and does not take jokes well, most fly over his head.

Barricade: very big (troubleshoes size) brown earth pony with grass green mane and tail, both cropped short. mark is a tower shield and lance side by side, emerald green eyes. is a royal guard in canterlot and a kind hearted soul, always willing to help out those who need it. almost never seen without his heavy guard barding, which covers most of his body

Solar Defender: yellow crystal pony with a pale yellow mane and tail, mane cropped short, tail at knee length. mark is a shield with a styalised sun emblasoned in the middle, the sun looking similar to celestia's own mark, emerald eyes. is a crystal guard in the crystal empire and is rarely seen without a smile on his face, even during sombra's reign, he tried to encourage ponies to keep positive, with little success. he serves cadence and shining armor with almost single minded devotion, eagerly following every order to the letter

Nightshade: dark blue nocturne (bat pony) with a dark grey mane and tail, both cropped short. mark is a simple black band with two eye holes cut in it, a simple mask. is a night guard at canterlot and is a career prankster, using his skill at hiding from just about anypony to play pranks, usually by scaring his comrades half to death. but despite this prankster attitude, he takes his job as a guard very seriously while on duty.

No red and black alicorns, sure, but how about insect-winged teal ones? I created a species with the Pony Generator a while back and wrote it into my own Stargate story, but said story is looking farther away by the day, so how about passing a copy of their off-world alien race to this story? Use any of the characters or just the race as you will. (How big a role would these OCs have, anyway?)

Species: Odonans
Planet: Odona
Motif: They are named after Odonata, the dragonfly group of insects, and their names are taken from types of dragonflies.
Abilities: Odonans can fly, but not cloud-high. They have good night vision. Their horns can channel electricity-like energy streams for illumination, defense, or other tasks such as welding, but little other magic. Their cutie marks resemble unique Rorschach tests that have more obvious meanings to them than to outsiders.
Civilization: Partly based on the Tollan. In my story, they live in a Wraith-controlled Pegasus Galaxy, but developed advanced weapons fast enough to set up a ground-based turret defense before they could be stopped and now hold their planet as a stronghold, easily stopping even Hive Ships. They tried trading with other worlds, but the Wraith discovered and targeted those trading partners instead (with knowledge they shouldn't have had, hint hint), forcing the planet to withdraw and become fully self-sustaining. Since you say you're not in Pegasus, you can either substitute or just rewrite for that part. They have a competent military and a good, fair leader, but are cautious of the outside, though maybe they should be cautious of someone a bit…closer to home.
Members of note:
imgh.us/Odonan_-_Anax.png
Anax: the leader of the Odonans, actual title pending. He is open to advantageous connections with sufficiently "prepared" groups if they can prove their worth, but will likely avoid neutral connections out of caution and fear for said connection being targeted by their enemies.
imgh.us/Odonan_-_Eryth.png
Erith: a squad leader of the Odonan Security Force, he is focused on his job first and foremost.
imgh.us/Odonan_-_Sym.png
Sym: either the daughter or niece (undecided) of Anax. Smart and nice, if a bit gullible, she works under Trith. That's a yellow headband, by the way.
imgh.us/Odonan_-_Trith.png
Trith: a history-enthused technician, she maintains the security turrets. My, that monocle looks pretentiously suspicious…

4301423

Halla

Like the bread? Wait, that's Challah.

I only saw the first one .

...Close enough (though Beyond is the better movie). The reason I asked that is because it's either beat around the bush or outright say to crib parts of Chekov's personality if needed.

May I throw my hat into this world?

I have a few OCs. Should I PM you them? Or something?

4301446
Here's a simple rule for all requests for OC submission: No single-day OCs.
Unless you want to end up on a list like [THIS] Stay away from randomizing generators.
You'll most likely be ignored as authors shy away from sounding harsh

4301492
Good thing my guys were crafted, not randomized. I'm just bad at drawing, so I used the Generator.

I have a few on the backburner

Name: Iron Maiden
Race: Earth Pony
Profession: Blacksmith
Cutie Mark: Anvil and Hammer
Coloration: Iron grey coat with a charcoal like mane and tail. Both are singed short, and she's often quite sooty. Has no problem making weapons, armor and accessories alike, as long as she gets to hit hot irons with her hammer.

Originally from a Pathfinder Campaign, where, on her way to delivery Guardsmen spears to Celestia's castle, she was lead away from Faeries of Oberon to another world. She stayed there for the better part of a year, eventually forging gear worthy of taking on Oberon, and she won her way back to Equestria in combat (12th Level fighter).

Name: Annabelle Neu

Height: 6'3" (192.024 CM)

Weight: 254 lbs (115.212 KG)

Hair: Strawberry blond and cut to just above the neck it is kept loose and messy

Eyes: Light blue/the color of the sky on a clear day

Ethnicity: German

Rank: Master Sergeant

Duty: Weapons specialist

Annabelle (Annie to her friends Master Sergeant to everyone else) Neu was recruited to the Stargate program after her superiors gave her a test. During the test she managed to disassemble and reassemble a wraith stunner, a zat gun, and a Ma'Tok staff and then figure out how they work. All in under twenty minutes. She was assigned to Shangri La as it's weapons expert not long after her recruitment.

On the base no one gets a gun or ammo without going through her, or one of her subordinates. If it fires bullets she knows it's name, it's nicknames, it's caliber, rate of fire, and can field strip and reassemble it blindfolded. She also currently holds the record for fastest disassemble an reassemble speed record for each weapon on the base. Her preferred weapon type is light support weapons, her favorite being her M249 Minimi para version.

When off duty she appears as a gentle giant, kind to all, and soft spoken. When on duty she is a fire spewing demoness who will bite the head off of anyone caught screwing around in her armory. The only real thing to set her of outside of work, is when people make a joke or comparison between her and Nazis due to her being a blond haired blue eyed German woman.

Would a brother/sister duo work? Or even just one of them?

Two Zebras, one adult and one filly.

Brother (Marcus) roughly 20 years old with a bushy mustache, a Stetson, and a mark of a bubbling cauldron to signify his talent in alchemy. Generally has a cheerful personality and is very willing to make friends. Also is highly oblivious and outspoken. A fun quirk of his is that he often misremembers what words mean and sometimes accidentally says something entirely different than what he meant or even trails off as he tries to remember exactly how to say what is on his mind.

Sister (Zyrene) roughly 10 years old, no mark, mute. She's basically everything Marcus is not. She had a more subdued personality and is generally less willing to make friends. That said, she has a fascination with learning about biology of various sentient creatures (hinting at a talent in a medical profession). She's also much more observant than her brother.

4301930 I don't see why they wouldn't
