    Droppin' By

Hello, I was in the neighborhood and had just realized that my last blog post was a bit of a downer, given that it was around the time of my Grandma's passing and funeral. I think I oughta leave you folks with something a bit more upbeat or at least something neutral.

    And Now, A Newsletter

Huh, back in July I said I oughta talk more around here. It's now the day after Christmas and I have not, in fact, talked more around here.

So, I'll give you the rundown on what I've been up to since then. Warning, it gets a little long in talking about last summer's vacation and about a new fixation I have.

Birthday Bios: Blue Square · 2:42pm Nov 13th, 2016

And here’s another character that reminds me that I probably should get back to Hearth’s Warming is Merry in Our Town—especially since it’s November, and the next thing I know, it’ll be December! Wow, time sure does fly, doesn’t it?

Geez, these Birthday Bios steal time from the incomplete fics that are not Brotherly Bonding Time, huh?

Okay, I’m getting off track—Blue Square, everybody.

Blue Square was born in Paddock City to Powder Snow and Alta. His two older brothers, Double Diamond and Black Diamond, were eager to be their mother’s helpers when it came to the baby. As family, they couldn’t really backpedal when Blue got fussy and cried—which was, unfortunately, a lot.

While most babies loved being dirty, Blue didn’t. Anything and everything that made it past his fur and onto his skin irritated him, and he’d be complaining in any way he could. As a baby, he’d cry; as a toddler, he’d whine. Black Diamond had tried to get him to see the beauty of dirt, but those efforts were in vain. The most that Blue could ever stand was just walking on top of dry soil—if he stepped in mud, he complained.

Predictably, he wasn’t much of an outdoor pony like the rest of his family was. He preferred to stay inside with a good book. He taught himself how to read, and when he entered school, he was quickly at the top of his class. He read so much that he ended up straining his eyes, which left him wearing glasses for years to come.

As he grew older, he had a knack for finding patterns and details. And if any little detail was off in a pattern, it annoyed him. He’d reorganize shelves, eat a certain number of carrots, measure ingredients to its exactness when helping his parents cook, and aim for symmetry in his art. His persnickety habits annoyed his brothers, and they often resorted to picking on him.

However, there were times when they got along. Despite his dislike of dirt and disorganization, Blue warmed up to the family pastime of camping. His brothers were usually his only playmates, so they all would go exploring in the forest and pretend to be heroes, fighting monsters and saving innocent ponies.

He was a young colt when his sister Green Circle was born. He was happy that he wasn’t the youngest anymore, and loved his baby sister. However, what he didn’t love was changing diapers and getting puked on. Naturally, he’d be the one complaining about it the most.

A hobby that was successfully passed down to him was the love of skiing. Thankful for a thick winter coat that shielded him from the cold, Blue found that he really liked sliding down a snowy hill—whether it be on a sled or skis. He never would make it to his oldest brother’s level, but it was fine by him. It was just a hobby, unlike his true calling.

Being the chosen student for the Salt Lick Valley Math-Off at the age of eleven, he managed to get pretty far in the contest, hitting third place for it. During one round, he ended up getting his cutie mark for solving a complex equation. While he didn’t win, he figured that his cutie mark was its own reward.

Soon enough, teenage brother Double Diamond had developed an arrogant attitude, which bugged him very much. Blue would always roll his eyes at his bragging—sure, Double Diamond was the athlete, but Blue was the academic that didn’t need to disobey his parents to satisfy his desires. Blue tried to comfort a jealous Black Diamond, but to no avail… though, Blue was not one for tact.

Then, an avalanche hit Paddock City, and it was discovered that Double Diamond caused it. Blue helped with the cleanup as much as he could, though he always dug snow in a certain pattern, which often annoyed Black Diamond. Still, after the cleanup, he noticed that his oldest brother was downtrodden with guilt, and he always tried to cheer him up. But, lacking tact as always, he only served to remind Double Diamond that none of the neighbors really trusted him anymore.

So, his oldest brother left, and after a few months of letters, they didn’t hear from him. He was witness to his parents’ panic and earnestness in trying to find him, Blackie resigning himself to taking his brother’s place, and Greenie try to cope with art.

He himself tried to cope with math and rearranging everything, but everyone noticed that he ended up taking his fussiness too far. He noticed every ingredient in everything he ate, he noticed every small thread out of place in whatever his father and sister knitted, and he noticed every sound that was made in his classroom, distracting him from his schoolwork.

He often tried to rearrange everything, hoping that the missing piece of his family’s pattern would somehow return. He was often interrupted by Black Diamond, who was pretty snippy himself. They often got into arguments over small things, which led Greenie to call them Doofus 1 and Doofus 2.

Just as the family was going to accept that Double Diamond may be dead, a letter from him arrived. His mother read it aloud, and the family learned together that he had ended up in a cult, having his cutie mark removed (how is that even possible, they wondered), only to later get it back and chase the leader off. And now, he was the mayor of the town.

They went to that town that Hearth’s Warming, and while Blue was happy to see Double Diamond, he didn’t quite shake off his coping mechanism. Thanks to heightened fussiness and his lack of tact, he ended up getting on the bad side of DD’s friend Sugar Belle. Still, everyone was brought together in the holiday, and even if he did get messier than he liked, he’ll admit it was fun.

He’ll go on to the university when he’s older, where he’d learn more and more about math and equations and formulas and stuff. He’d spend years studying until he himself became a math professor at the university, and quite frankly, one of the strictest and fussiest ones. Often, whenever they’d meet, Double Diamond would have to remind him to chill, especially when it’s a family reunion when they’re meant to have fun.

As an adult, Blue Square will take some time to relax from his near constant stress. Often, his way to do so would be to hang out with his family at a ski resort—just like old times.

Amidst chaos and uncertainty, he retreated to an area where he could control and know everything. An understandable reaction, but it's a shame he never quite found a way to trend out of the discontinuity and resume his regular function.

And now, a love song:
