It’s been almost 2 months since I last updated, and slightly longer since I last wrote anything. I don’t see any more coming along soon.
I really haven’t been reading or writing anything at all. I just don’t have the desire to do it anymore. I’m trying to get back into reading, but I just can’t start. I really like dark stuff, but all the good dark stuff is always extremely long and I’m intimidated by the word count.
When I first started writing, I thought it would be easy to pump out a fic. And it was. I wrote with no sense of pacing, no definite sense of any character development, and no regard to any writing mechanics of any sort that made writing decent. And that made it easy.
Looking back on it, the first chapter was terrible. There are a lot of things about it that I regret, mostly the gore, a few specific lines I shouldn’t have added, and Carrot Top’s personality. I should have seen that these things would cause a problem, but I never did. Equestria Daily pointed out these problems when I submitted the first chapter, (even before it was on FimFiction) and I never changed it. I felt that what I had created in about a week’s time was absolute perfection, and should remain untouched in order not to ruin it. I was wrong.
Now I’m stuck with what I have. I can’t change Carrot Top’s personality or the chain of events that lead up to where the fic is now. I should have introduced Twilight, but I had no idea where I was going with the fic. I thought that it would end immediately after that chapter, but I felt that the ending would come too abruptly. I decided to extend it by 2 chapters, giving myself more time to ease into the predetermined ending. This extension kept going and going up to now and I feel that it is a good ending point.
The problem is ending it. I know exactly how it will end, down to the last word. I have no idea how to get to that exact ending. A while back I had an idea, but I would have to backtrack a little by getting Dinky out of her current situation, and doing something else. I feel that the fic is already an emotional rollercoaster as it is, so I don’t think I will do this. My only other options are to roll with a different ending out of nowhere, keep extending the current route, or to slap down the current ending onto a tiny stub of relevance and claim it’s completed.
Recently, I’ve been thinking about rewriting the entire thing, or maybe parts of it. I decided against this. Over a thousand people have read each of the first 3 chapters, with 5 thousand reading the first chapter. If I rewrite any part, it means that the people who have already read it would have to read it again in order to make the ending seem relevant with Carrot Top’s new personality (among other things). I could also just rewrite the whole thing and upload it as a different fic, but this goes against the FimFiction rules.
So I’m left with nothing else to do. I set this fic to hiatus for a while without making an update on it, but it really wasn’t a hiatus—more along the lines of indecision about whether or not to cancel it. I’ve made that decision now, and I’m going with it. I might eventually come back to it with inspiration and a desire to write, but I don’t have that now. I will never forget this fic, nor will I delete it, but I won’t be checking on it that often.
So for those people who liked reading this fic, thanks for enjoying my work. I really enjoyed getting feedback on something that I have created, and this was the first time I’ve gotten something like it.
P.S. I wrote this a night before posting it. I've done a bit of thinking over the course of the day, and I realized that writing this has actually given me a little motivation to continue. Don't be surprised if I change my mind and post a chapter out of nowhere. Also, I realized that there's another reason why I haven;t had the ability to write, but I won't post it because it might offend a select few people if I talk about it.
I personally have no problem with a rewrite. If you think that would make your story better, go for it. No one's stopping you, and I, for one, would fully support your decision to rewrite.
*whew* Considering that this is one of the first ever fanfics I've not only ever read on this site, but ever (I hadn't read any fanfiction before finding and joining FIMFiction), I am REALLY glad to see that last part!

If rewriting the story to get it how you want it is what you have to do, then it's what you have to do. It's a tale that you chose to share with us, and if you have a problem with it it's only right that you do what you think will fix it.
I understand I how projects work. I may not be a writer but it not easy once you get started. I hope you do come back and make an update. Best of luck my friend.

I always write an extensive outline before I write a fic and stick to it.
If you'd like to re-write your story to make it easier to continue, that's one thing. Giving up because it's hard is another.

Just reading these comments got me thinking about why I'm hesitant to rewrite the fic.
The way I'm thinking about it, Completely rewriting the fic to change something as major as Carrot Top's personality would be like burning an important document after scanning it onto a computer just because there are "Better copies" of it that won't get torn. Once I edit the fic, there's nowhere to publish the original. Small edits are fine, I guess, but nothing too major that spans between multiple scenes/chapters.

Yeah, outlines are good. I almost started writing a second fic back in late march, but then I learned that someone I somewhat knew was writing a fic with a very similar theme/concept, and scrapped the idea. I actually started with an outline, and I knew exactly how the entire fic would be organized. I didn't know what the actual content would be, or what the actual plot would be, but the concept was there.
If I do update the fic, I'll actually have to write a mini outline of what the rest of the fic will be like.
Meh, I might go back and start to writing that other fic. I actually kind know the guy that had the similar idea a little better now, and I can ask him if he's okay with me writing it. I'm not sure if his version was eve published, though. I also still need to think of something that will drive the plot forward.
Also, right now I'm feeling more inclined to work with music than literature. Now just transcribing sheet music, but actually making music. I have no experience with electronic music, so it would probably be music for concert band and/or orchestra. This type of music has almost no audience from what I've seen though, and will probably go unnoticed. I also have no experience making music in general, so it'll probably be pretty bad at first.

You know, I think you timed this comment perfectly. A small community of people I hung around with nonstop for the past year was abruptly dissolved last night, and now I'm left with slight depression and a lot of time on my hands. I've been thinking about how I want to continue this fic, and now I think I have I route I can stick with. I need to talk about it with someone first, though. Also, there's a small project that I want to complete that's related to what happened last night.
