Just another blog post since I love reading your guy's comments.
Recently I've been thinking about what really makes an interesting clop. We could go into detail on every single aspect, but what I've really noticed stick out is originality.
Look at Headless Rainbow's stories for one. Disgusting goreish clop, and yet a good number of posters are still finding the action hot... myself included. Why? I don't get off to gore, but I think its because clop that dark is not really touched or attempted by anyone else, therefore the situations the author comes up with are rather new and interesting. As someone who has read plenty saucy stories and can grow rather bored of them quickly as a result, I can stress that this is pretty important. Sure we can just say that it's all up to personal taste, but you would still be better off it was original.
Now with Headless Rainbow in mind, I'm thinking will probably venture away from the vanilla types of story where nothing to extreme happens. It basically comes down to filling a empty market.
Let's go over some overviews of possible clopfics.
-Rarijack ship. The two lesbian ponies fall in love and have sex in their bed.
It could probably be amazingly well written, but I don't think I would make it past the description unless it has some interesting kinks outlined.
-Rarity and Applejack have sex hidden under a stand in the Ponyville market.
Getting there if the reader finds public sex interesting, why not add Applebloom or Sweetie Belle coming along and catching them in the act. Blackmails the reluctant girls into letting her join in exchange for not ratting them out to everyone around. It's good if they find reluctant partners interesting. But doing this, you're basically weighing your odds picking and choosing which kinks to focus on hoping enough people will be interested in it.
But what separates an attempt at a original clop from something that just comes out weird? For example:
Rarity is overcome with a curse that causes her to cum uncontrollably and non-stop. It threatens her very sanity unless she maintains skin on skin contact with a stallion, which causes it to become easier to handle. (Points for being anthro or human seeing as being naked isn't that big of a deal for ponies). She can rid herself of the effects for a little while by doing something naughty with a stallion and taking in their cum, or she can rid herself of it completely by giving it to three other mares she knows.
Well I'd go into better detail but I don't want to give away any ideas I am considering turning into a story. It's important to note it doesn't just have to be the kinky sex that's new and interesting. But sex can be the same but the lead into what caused the ponies or humans having sex can be original.
I don't really know what else I'm going with this. I think I'm just rambling at this point. I'm just hoping I didn't just write something that was painfully obvious for everyone else. It's fun for me either way. Go out there and write something we haven't seen before.
You make a good point, it can be a very well written clopfic, but it's it's just another clopfic of the kind we've seen hundreds of before, it's not going to be very noticeable. On the other hand, it could be significantly less well written and could just be another Porn Without Plot story, but if it's a shipping that's somewhat uncommon, it's gonna draw more people.
