Google Docs · 2:59pm Oct 18th, 2016
Up until now, I've been using the Notes application on my iPad to write my stories, though I often used the word processor on Fimfiction to do most of my editing.
And then iOS 9 happened.
The app would crash in the middle of long writing sessions, and I would lose a good hour or so worth of work, with no way of recovering it, as the crashes occurred because the app was trying to send me an email with the contents of the document.
After this continued to happen under iOS 10, I finally said, "Screw it! Google Docs it is!"
I chose Google Docs because it's compatible with Fimfiction's word processor, and it works both online and without internet connectivity.
I'll be spending a lot of my free time this week evaluating the contents of each of the 181 documents I have, copying and pasting them into Google Docs, and double and triple checking that I don't miss a single word, and sorting them into folders based on which of my universes they exist, what stage I was at as a writer, and how much time I would like to pass at a minimum before anyone else lays eyes on them.
I don't feel comfortable writing while this process is taking place, so I'm very motivated to get this done as efficiently as possible.
And then, when it's all over, I'll have to make copies of each document on a backup account in case I get hacked, and then download it all to a flash-drive that no one will ever see.
A lot of these files are poorly written, ridiculously blatant wish-fulfilling, self-insertion fics. Some of it won't see the light of day for legal reasons, and some of it would leave the world a better place if it vanished into thin air, but I'm keeping all of them. Even if some of them are grammatical nightmares, incomplete thoughts, or cringe-inducing sludge that should be wiped from the face of the earth, I get to see how I've evolved as a writer since my beginnings almost a year and a half ago, and serve as a milestone for me to look back on as I continue to improve.
I know. My Google Docs stopped working on my IPad.
